William Barland Hays 155th Pennsylvania Volunteer Inf., Co. K
William Barland Hays enlisted in the 155th Pennsylvania Infantry, Company K, as a private on August 18, 1862 in Armstrong County,
Pennsylvania during the War of the Rebellion for a 3 year term. The commanding
officer of the 155th was Captian J. Andrew Cline. On September 15, 1862, the
155th was in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania at which time William was paid a bounty
of $25.00 plus a premium of $2.00.
The 155th was in the Maryland Campaign, September
to October of 1862 and were held in reserve at the Battle of Antietam. The Muster
Rolls to October 31, 1862 make note that William was sick in hospital in Frederick
City, Maryland. He died on 7 Nov 1862 in Frederick City, Washington Co, Maryland of Typhoid at the age of 20.
His father, John Hays, was notified of his death and signed the following memoranda written on the "Record of Death and Interment" to claim his personal
effects on November 18,1862.

William Barland Hays was buried on 9 Nov 1862 in Antietam National Cemetary,
Frederick, Washington Co, Maryland. The date of William's death
is listed at Antietam National Cemetery as November 19th, 1862. This date is
in direct contradiction with all of the reports from Convent Hospital, Frederick City,
Maryland at the time of death and date of interment contained in his Military
Records file. According to the cemetery, his grave number is 4037.
