If tomorrow all the things were gone I'd worked for all my life And I had to start again With just my children and my wife I'd thank my lucky stars To be living here today 'Cause the flag still stands for freedom And they can't take that away. |
I'm proud to be an American Where at least I know I'm free, And I won't forget the men who died Who gave that right to me, And I gladly stand up next to you And defend her still today, 'Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land God Bless the U.S.A. |
From the lakes of Minnesota To the hills of Tennessee, Across the plains of Texas From sea to shining sea. From Detroit down to Houston And New York to L.A., There's pride in every American heart And it's time we stand and say: |
I'm proud to be an American Where at least I know I'm free, And I won't forget the men who died Who gave that right to me, And I gladly stand up next to you And defend her still today, 'Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land God Bless the U.S.A. --Lee Greenwood |

What was the ocean voyage like?
Immigrants of the 1850's would have sailed on a "bark" (pictured at right), a three-masted vessel with foremast and mainmast square rigged and the third mast fore and aft rigged.

I was born in Gary, Indiana. I am the youngest of five children. My father was a ladlecraneman for U.S. Steel.
I have heard ancestral stories all my life and I owe a huge debt to my Aunt Ada who wrote down a family history. My aunt turned 98 on January 17th. She passed away in the morning of January 30th, 2007 She passed on her love of family history to me and I am grateful for all the information she wrote down. I have not found any errors in it. She will be missed very much.
Other than my aunt, the biggest factor that has influenced my interest in genealogy has been the untimely deaths of my brother and mother in 1973/74. I guess that caused me to have a "mid-life crisis" at the early age of 21. Learning about the difficulties and challenges of my ancestors has helped me to deal with problems in my own life and put them in a proper perspective. When surveying the births, lives and deaths of your ancestors, you understand that "this too shall pass".

Of course, one of my interests is genealogy, but others include counted cross stitch, crafts, sewing, flower gardening, scrapbooking and my sons. I also collect "Cat's Meow Village". I am a stay-at-home mom and recently returned to college and finished my degree. Although much of my ancestry is Roman Catholic, my branch belongs to the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod
