The Titus Reunion

A very favorable day brought together a large number of the member of this old family last Saturday, who spent a very pleaant day in social intercourse in the inviting shade of Mr. Elijah Baker's pleasant grove.

The Atlantic band was present and sustained their well-earned reputation for excellent music, contributing not a little to the general enjoyment of the occasion.  After a short time spent in friendly greetings the gathering was invited to partake of any elegant dinner which invitation none were slow to accept.

When all had partaken of the repast Mr. James Titus, the president, after a few remarks, introduced Rev. Hall, of the Sharon Baptist church, who offered prayer.  He was followed by Mr. Elijah Baker, as the historian of the occasion, who gave interesting information regarding the several branches of the family.  There are ten original branches of the family which are now in the western States.

The relationship as now enrolled numbers three hundred and forty-two people upward of two hundred and fifty of whom were there assembled.  One branch of the family has sixty descendants.  Mr. Baker was followed by other speakers among whom were Revs. Hignell and Hall, Geo. Trout, Daniel Stambaugh and D.D. McVey.

Then came election of officers, Mr. Jas. Titus being elected president, Jacob S. Trout vice president, and E. Baker secretary.  The afternoon wore away in pleasant intersourse, and as evening approached the relative and friends departed for their homes, to meet again on the third Saturday of August, 1883.

The fourth annual Titus reunion was held in Baker's Grove, east of town, last
Saturday and was a great success.  Over 200 persons were present.

They were the descendants of Archibald and Ann Titus, who emigrated to this country from New Jersey seventy years ago, having at the time a family of five sons and as many daughters.  From these sprang ten distinct branches, now numbering 84 families and 404 descendants in all, residing in 13 states and territories.

Since the last reunion, there have been seven births, three deaths, and three
marriages.  The next reunion will be held August 30th 1885.

Titus Family Reunion

The second annual reunion of the Titus family was held Saturday at Buhl Farm and in spite of the unpleasant weather was largely attended.  128 sitting down in the sumptuous dinner served at noon.  Many were present from a distance.

Mrs. Mary Hanna of Sharon offered prayer and Isaiah Titus, president of the association made an address.  The gathering joined in the singing of "America."  At the business session, reports were heard from the various committees and all of the old officers were re-elected.

These are: President, Isaiah Titus; treasurer, A. I. Baker; secretary, Mrs. M. Buck; historian, Mrs. Irvine Moyer.  Clyde Moore, Frank Lary, A.W.Meehan, Frank Jones, Mrs. James Titus and Fred Dunham were named on the amusement committee.

An informal social time followed the business session and was  much enjoyed.  Miss Belle Titus of Pittsburg created lots of amusement when she wrapped handkerchiefs about her ankles to protect herself from the cold and the secretary was ordered to place the action in the official records.

The Titus family is one of the oldest in Mercer County and has been prominent in the affairs of the county.  Reunions were held for many years, but were discontinued in 1888 and revived two years ago through the efforts of Mrs. Buck, the secretary.

The gathering was composed of descendants of Archibald Titus,  born in Delaware in 1770 of Scotch-Irish descent and Nancy Hartford, born in new Jersey in 1778.  They located in Hickory township in 1802.  The family consisted of five sons and six daughters the following growing into manhood and womanhood; William, Lucy, John, Anna, Mary, Samuel, Sarah, James,
and Eliza.

Archibald Titus and several of his sons belonged to a company of militia, which went to Perry's aid at Erie in 1813.  Archibald Titus was a stock-holder in the first turnpike built in Western Pennsylvania and was active in the pioneer work that had to be done.

Up to 1888 the connection had grown to 95 families, consisting of 447 persons, scattered over 13 states. This history will be brought up to date by the historian before the next reunion, which will be held on the fourth Saturday of August, 1918 at the same place.

Among the guests from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Hannan, Misses Belle, Emma, and Carrie Titus and Mrs. McCarron of Pittsburg; Mrs. Ida Winner and daughter Eliza, Mrs. Will Lary and daughters, Esther and Mayme of Grove City and Mrs. Charles Lary of Mercer.
