Camp Mansfield, (LA) Feb 22nd (1863)
(p1) Dear Wife
I got your welcome letter of Feb 1st and was glad to find
that you were all well as I am. I wrote four letters before I got
it. I will send you an envelope in all my letters so all you will
have to do will be to put your letters in it and send it. I sent
you a check by Adams express but suppose you got it before this.
you said that you had only 10 dollars from the Police relief you
had aought to get more than that why dont you let me know the
reason you don't get it. others get
(p2) it from the date of enlistment and so should you. let me
know all about it when you write and how you are getting along if
you are well and comfortable. I shall feel more contented though
I should like to be with you. I shall feel happy to know that you
are all well and living comfotable. you must not expect to see me
home before the end of the war. it is hard to get a discharge
now, and I want to have the bounty at the end of the war but I am
in hopes the war will be over soon. you must pray that God will
spare us all to see the happy time when we shall meet again.
(p3) I have not got any papers from you yet. you can send me
a box by Adams Express. let some one direct that knows how send
some tobaco and a pipe. send hard tobaco some papers and
envelope. you can send the likeness in the box. write as soon as
you get this kiss all the children for me. give my love to Belle and john and
