(p1)Dear Wife
I take this cahnce to pen you a few lines to let you know
that I am well and hope you and the children are the same. We
have all fot back from Port Hudson safe. we are now across the
river oppisite New Orleans. we had a hard march but stood it well
the General says we are the best regiment he has got. it is said
here that we are to serve nine months. if so we sha;; be home in
July but you need not be to sure. I hope it is so if you can find
out
(p2) anything about it let me know. I got a letter from you
and was glad to find you were all well. I got a letter from Sam. I will to him soon. I have not got
the box yet. Frank and the boys are
all well and send their love to you all. give my love to Miss Halliday tell her I will bring Frank home with me. give my love to Mrs Mudget and Samuel
and the family. give my love to Belle and
John and the children. I hope soon to see them and thank
them for their kind regards. give my love to all my friends. I
cant name them all. I was glad to hear that you
(p3) were getting along well as it makes me feel better. I
hope you get both reliefs yet for I have to even it for we are
not playing soldier out here. write as soon as you get this. Tell
Jane she must be able to read soon
and Alfred must hurry and learn
fast. Willie must leave of the titty
if he wants papa to come home soon but my dear little ones you
must all be good to mama when papa is gone and God bless you and
send papa home once more and now my dear wife you must not fear
any more but cheer up to meet me with a smile
(p4) when I return. it is lonesome for me here and I feel as
bad as you but God is good and we will soon meet
