Port Hudson (LA) (note: Port Hudson is about 13 miles north of Baton Rouge, LA. A major battle was fought here 22 May-09 Jul 1863)

(p1) Dear Wife I take this chance to write you a few lines to let you know that I am well and hope you and the children are the same. I received your ever welcome letter the 2nd and was glad to find that you were all well. I got the money but did not want it as I was paid the day before you may expect some money soon. I have been sick with the fever and ague. The last three weeks but I am better now it is sickly in the regiment. We are in a good camp now and think we shall stay here tile the hot weather is over. Frank Halliday is in the hospital but is geting better. I have heard of the roits in the city. I think it would be better for them to come out and fight here and help us instead of burning and plundering there it will put the war back six months longer as it gives the rebels courage when they had nearly give out. I am glad to hear the children are getting on so well. I hope the will learn fast

(p2) Janey must not cry for papa for God will keep him safe tell Alpy to be a good boy and learn fast and Willie must soon go to school. kiss all the children for me may God bless them. give my love to Samuel and Mrs Mudget give my love to John and Belle and the family and to all my friends. I would sent you my likeness but there no place here to get it taken. I have heard that the Police relief is started again did you get it and do you get the other relief Our colonel is away or I would send you a certificate but I should not think you would need one as my letters would be sificient to show that I am doing active service in the regiment. Write as soon as you get this send me a newspaper you can put in a plug of tabacco in it no more at present

Your affectionate husband
