Newtown, (LA) Nov 19th, 1863
(p1)Dear wife, I thake this chance to write you a few lines
to let you know that I am well and hope that you and the children
are the same. I have got nearly over the fever. We are going into
camp soon to stay for the winter. We do not go to Texas yet. I
dont know what place we shall camp in but think it will near this
place. We had a fight a few days ago and Owen
Maker of our company was badly wounded.
I have not had a letter from the last 6 weeks and this is the
fourth that I have sent to you. I shall not send any more till I
get them answered. I see others get their letters regular and I
think that ought to get mine. I sent you 25 dollars of my last
pay and I am ankous to know if it went safe and I should like to
hear from you oftenre.
(p2)P.S. I have just got a letter from you dated Nov 1st and
was happy to hear that you were all well and got the money. I am
glad that you got it in good time. I expect we shall be paid soon
again in the course of this month. I am glad that the children
are learning fast and that Willie
can talk so plain and Albert read so
well and Jane is growing fast. I
hope she is learning to read as fast. She must not cry for papa
will come home as soon as he can we dont find any difference out
here between the Holidays and the others. I trust that before
they come again I shall be home if God is willing. Give my love
to Samuel and Mrs
Mudget and family give my love to
John and Belle and the family
and all my friends. good bye for present. affectionate
