Connection

Extracted from notes by Floyd Martin Wells

Robert James Yule
Born: 29 April 1861,
in Carsphairn, Kirkcudbright County Scotland, to John Yule and Jane (Martin) Yule. It is believed that John Yule died soon after Robert was born and Jane went to Kilwinning, Ayr. County, Scotland and married John Stevenson. They had a daughter Christina "Tina" Stevenson born 3, Nov. 1865 in Ayr. County Scotland.

Jane Martin Yule Stevenson had a brother ,Harry Martin, in Scotland who came to Pittsburgh, PA, USA to start a coal mining business about 1865. After getting started in the business he wrote for John Stevenson and family to come to Pennsylvania to be manager of the coal mine. So, they all came to Pennsylvania. John and Jane had a son , Thomas Martin Stevenson born 3 April, 1869 in Pittsburgh. About 1873, John and Jane had a set of twins, names not known. Then in about 1875 they had a second set of twins, names not know. When the second set of twins were less than 10 months old, there was a flu epidemic hit that area and Harry Martin died. Then Jane and both sets of twins died about the same time and Jane with both sets of twins were burried in the same grave.

With Harry Martin, the coal mine owner dead the mine closed. Then John, with Robert James Yule his stepson and Christina and Thomas, all small children, left Pittsburgh and moved to Jackson County Illinois and got a job managing a coal mine there. Christina, only about 10 or 11 years old, kept house for the family until she was old enough to get married in 1881(16 yrs. old).

Robert was working in the coal mines and on his own. He married Laura Jane Hughes on 6, June 1883. Thomas Martin Stevenson Sr. married Vashti Champion.

With children all married, John decided to go to Idaho and manage a mine there and Tom and Vashti decided to go where John was. Things were good there till John's health started failing and he decided to make another move to Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada where he died on 25, Jan. 1897. When John went to Canada, Tom and Vashti moved back to Murphysboro, Illinois where they lived the rest of their lives. Christina died 18, Feb. 1899. Robert died in 1942, and are burried at Murphysboro, Illinois.

Most of this data is from Thomas Martin Stevenson Jr. Grandson of John and Jane Stevenson, of what he could remember his father telling him when he was a small boy. This data is for the benefit of all the descendants of the above families. Compiled by Floyd M. Wells
