The unofficial temperature of 40 below at Cambridge may have contributed to the death of Miss Elizabeth Ackley, 75-year-old recluse of Railroad Avenue, who was found frozen outside James Fairbanks home at 7 a.m. today when Fairbanks returned home from work.
Marks of floundering in the snow between the Ackley and Fairbanks houses showed where the dead woman, a suffer with chronic heart trouble, had twice stumbled as she made her way to her neighbor's home. Dr Charles H Holmes, coroner, and Police chief Charles Cantwell investigated, but according to Dr Holmes, the exact cause of death will be difficult to determine. In reconstructing the case, officials sought to discover whether the woman had died of a heart attack and subsequently frozen or whether she had fallen and frozen before help arrived.
Although Fairbanks and John Hahn, another near neighbor, had been endeavoring to keep up the fires each day in the dead woman's home, she had not been seen since late Saturday afternoon.
A sister, Mrs Willard Russell of Quaker Springs, who it is said tried to persuade Miss Ackley to come home with her last week, has been notified. She was buried in Woodlands Cemetery, Cambridge, Washington , New York.12 Sec. A 51 She appeared in the census 1870, 1880, 1900 & 1920 in New York.
