ST. JOHNSVILLE - Edith R. Humphrey, 85, died Thursday, May 8, 2003, at the St. Johnsville Nursing home, where she had resided since January.
Mrs. Humphrey was born in the town of Norway Nov. 17, 1917, a daughter of the late Harvey and Grace (Pardee) Ackley. She received her education in Norway, Newport and Dolgeville schools and was united in marriage with Alvey Humphrey in Cooperstown in 1937. For 50 years, Edith worked on the family farms in Norway, Little Falls and St. Johnsville. Mr. Humphrey preceded her in death in 1968. Following her retirement, she lived at Galinsky Apartments in Herkimer for several years and returned to St. Johnsville this past fall, due to her illness.
Mrs. Humphrey was a member of both the former Norway Baptist Church and Norway Grange in her early years. She was also a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Herkimer and was an active volunteer for the Community Service Center of the church for several years.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, James and Joan Humphrey of St. Johnsville; one daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Thomas Rowland of Ilion; one sister, Evelyn Chmielewski of Salisbury Center; two brothers, Harold Ackley of Dolgeville and Raymond Ackley of Norway; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Arthur Ackley.
Funeral services will be held at the Autenrith Funeral Home, Newport, on Saturday at 1 p.m. with Pastor Gordon Edgerton of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Herkimer, officiating. Interment will follow in the Salisbury Rural Cemetery.
Calling hours at the funeral home are Friday (today) from 5-8 p.m.
