Oldtimers Recall Early Days as Maker Rises

WICHITA FALLS, Tex., Oct. 13.-(UP)- Shouts with which dusty cowboys 50 years ago urged Texas longhorn steers over the Chisholm Trail to Dodge City echoed here recently when a marker was unveiled where the cattle passed through Wichita Falls.
Among the oldtimers at the ceremony were half a dozen who made the long journey over the trail, which, in its entirety, extended from Mexico through six of the United States into Canada.
The guest of honor was Col. P.P. Ackley, now of Elk City, Okla., who was a pioneer cowhand when longhorns kicked up clouds of dust over the famous trail.
Through Col. Ackley's efforts the trail has been preserved in history by markers at Matamoras, Mex.: Brownsville and San Antonio, Tex.; Dodge City, Kas., and other towns.
Others at the ceremony included Sam Walker, Wichita Falls, who helped drive the first herd of Texas longhorns over the trail to Dodge City, and Phy Taylor, Wichita Falls, who, as a young cowboy, accompanied Theodore Roosevelt on his Oklahoma wolf hunt. He died on 6 Apr 1940 in Elk City, Beckham , Oklahoma.1,13 He was buried in Texola Cemetery, Texola, Beckham, Oklahoma.1,13 He.
