Mrs. Elizabeth M. (Schafer) Ackley died in her Warminster home after a debilitating
illness on Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008.
She was the beloved wife of the late Charles A. Ackley Sr.
Born in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late David and Margaret Smith
Schafer. Her brother, David, resides in Levittown.
She was a devoted and much loved mother of James, John, Robert (Denise Cosner),
Regina Carpenter (Donald) and Elizabeth Gorski (Stanley). Her son, Charles Jr.,
preceded her in death. She is survived by eight grandchildren, Samantha, Shawn,
Meghan, Andrew Ackley; Ian, Rebecca Carpenter; Stephanie and Nicholas Gorski.
Mrs. Ackley, in addition to her role as wife and mother, contributed to her community
and to her profession. She was a 1946 graduate of the Women's Hospital of Philadelphia
School of Nursing.
Betty served in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps during World War II.
While raising her family she worked part time for the Bucks County Department
of Health as a nurse in well child and polio clinics. In the mid 1960s Betty
was employed by Doylestown Hospital Visiting Nurse Service and eventually became
the agency director. During her tenure as director she established the hospital's
Home Care Service in 1968 and also began a meal program in senior centers that
eventually developed into the Central Bucks Meals on Wheels program.
Betty was committed to community service. She was a long-time member of the Warminster
Heights Coordinating Council and helped establish the food cupboard. She was
a founding member of the Federated Women's Club of Warminster and served as president
from 1964 to 1966. Throughout the 1960s, Betty was active in the Bucks County
Federation of Women's clubs and served in various elected offices, including
vice president, corresponding secretary, recording secretary and director on
the executive board. During her life, she maintained active involvement and interest
in Democratic politics.
Friends and family will be received at 9 a.m. Monday, Sept. 29, at Nativity of
Our Lord Church, 625 W. Street Road, Warminster. A Mass of Christian Burial will
follow at 10 a.m. Interment will be at Hillside Cemetery, Roslyn.
At the end of her life Mrs. Ackley and her family received wonderful care and
support from the agency she helped to grow and develop. The family requests donations
be sent to Doylestown Hospital Visiting Nurse Service or the Doylestown Hospital
Hospice Service, both at the Development Office, 595 W. State St., Doylestown,
PA 18901.

man died Thursday night of injuries he received when the pickup truck he was
driving rammed a utility pole on Churchville Road near Orchard Lane in Upper
Southampton. The accident occurred at 10:30. The driver. Charles Anthony Ackley
Jr. of Fairfield Drive. 27. was traveling south on Churchville Road when he apparently
lost control of the truck while rounding a curve and struck a pole just south
of Orchard Lane. The crash downed high voltage wires. Ackley was trapped in the
vehicle for a time and was extricated from the wreckage by the Southampton Fire
Co. Rescue Unit. Ackley was taken by Trevose Heights Rescue Squad to Warminster
General Hospital, where he died of his injuries at 11:05 p.m. Police said Ackley
suffered multiple chest and head injuries in the crash. There were no other passengers
in the vehicle. Philadelphia Electric Co. said there was no interruption of service
