TRINIDAD, Colo., May 8 (AP) - A two-year course in gunsmith training , believed by the school authorities to be the first of its kind in the nation, is to be open late this month at Trinidad Junior college.
In announcing the new course, President Dwight C Baird said the college has received inquiries and applications from 22 states. Many of these came from former service men whose interest in firearms had been awakened during the war and who wanted to make a life's work as gunsmiths.
The idea for the new course came from P.O. Ackley, nationally known gunsmith and operator of a Trinidad gun shop. He received many inquiries from men wanting to learn his trade and, not wishing to undertake the training of apprentices himself, he referred the applicants to the college.

Born April 29, 1905 in Saratoga Springs, New York, daughter of Norman B. and Sarah Elizabeth Ross. Married Parker Otto Ackley, in Granville, New York, August 21, 1928. Graduated Summa cum Laude from Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, Mass., in 1927, Majoring in Bible with a Minor in History.
She taught school in the Granville, New York area for a year before marriage, then they established a farm and trucking business. She then stopped teaching to raise a family. During the Depression they moved to Roseburg, Oregon where Parker established his gunsmithing and barrelmaking business.
In 1942 they moved to Ogden, Utah where she and Parker worked for some time in the Small Arms Division of the Ogden Arsenal. In 1944 they moved to Cimmaron, New Mexico for a year where Parker re-established his gun business. In 1945 they moved the business to Trinidad, Co. where she continued her teaching career. In 1951 Parker sold his gun business and moved to Holladay, Utah where Winn opened a branch of Tandy Leather Co., becoming the first female in a management position, from which she retired in 1968.
Survivors include three daughters, Virginia Woods, Ann Pearson, Jacqueline Chappell; sons-in-law, Wayne Maddy, Ronald Pearson, Jim Chappell; brother, Norman Ross; 18 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by husband P. O. Ackley, daughter, Jeanne Barney, son-in-law, John Barney, one grandchild and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Friday, August 18, 2 p.m. at Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary, 2350 East 1300 So. where friends may call one hour prior. Entombment, Larkin Sunset Lawn Mausoleum.
