Ackley, a retired postal worker and combat veteran of World War II, will be held at 3 p.m. today in South Park United Presbyterian Church, 519 McKinley Parkway. Burial will be in St. Matthews Cemetery, West Seneca.
Mr. Ackley, who was born in Buffalo, died Wednesday (Feb. 4, 2004) in Mercy Hospital after a short illness. He was 84.
He grew up in South Buffalo and had lived in the same house since he was 6 months old. He graduated from South Park High School, where he played football and basketball.
Mr. Ackley was drafted into the Army in 1941 and served in infantry units for four years in the Pacific Theater. He suffered a bullet wound from enemy fire in the upper chest in New Guinea. His decorations included the Purple Heart.
After his discharge from the Army, he worked as a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service from 1945 until he retired in 1978. He and his wife, the former Evelyne Brooks, were snowbirds, spending the last 22 winters in Seminole, Fla.
Mr. Ackley was a 50-year member of Buffalo Lakeland Lodge 846, F&AM, and he was a Shriner. He was active in many Masonic projects and organizations until his death.
He also had been active in the Kiwanis Club and was a charter member of Southtowns YMCA.
He and his wife also were active members of the Harbor Lights Kazoo Knocker Band in Seminole. The band, which featured homemade instruments, is well-known throughout Florida and has performed at the Florida State Fair.
Mr. Ackley was a sports fan and enjoyed taking trips throughout the nation and the Caribbean.
Survivors include his wife of 39 years; a daughter, Cindy Crawley of West Seneca; and two grandchildren.
In Feb 2004 he was a retired postal worker at Buffalo, Erie , New York. His Social Security Number was 122-10-0190 NY. He served in the military WW II in the US Army.16
