PORTLAND, OR - Shirley Lou Ackley was born December 28th, 1933 in Fargo, North Dakota. Her parents were Charles and Irene Regan. She has two sisters, Patricia and Diane, and one brother, Jack. Her family moved to the Seattle area in 1944. She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1951 and studied Pre-Nursing for one year at the University of Washington. She then worked as a general secretary for Allstate Insurance for 2 years. She met her future husband at a Scandinavian Dance Club at the University. She married Alfred Russell Ackley on October 2nd, 1954. Their first child, Steven, was born the following June and lived only a few hours. Her husband was an Officer in the Navy and they had received orders to move to Pensacola, Florida. Their second child, Alan Russell, was born August 24th, 1956 at the Pensacola Naval Hospital. Their 3rd child, Laura Marie, was born July 22nd, 1958 in the same hospital. Over the next 20 years they moved several times living in San Diego, California, Minneapolis, Minnesota, Norfolk, Virginia, Oak Harbor, Washington and finally Pt. Mugu, California. There were many times when she was a single parent as her husband was sometimes gone for 6-7 months at a time. She was an active member in the Officer's Wives Club, which included putting on plays, musical variety shows, and many fundraisers to assist military families. They retired from the military in 1975, and moved home to Yakima, Washington. During the last few years of their military life, she became an avid golfer, an activity she continued in Yakima. She was a member of the Yakima Country Club and was very active in the women's division holding most of the positions of leadership at one time or another. Her wintertime activity was bowling with her golfing buddies on a league at Minda Lanes. With several friends she helped to develop a dancing group called "The Grannettes". She danced with them for almost 20 years, performing at many nursing homes, charity functions and at the Memorial Follies at the Capitol Theatre.
Shirley was a very outgoing gregarious person, who enjoyed traveling in their trailer, usually throughout the southwest and one long tour throughout the United States. She would always be the first one to meet anyone new and she always made people feel as if they knew her forever. She was a wonderful wife and mother, her many activities and her outgoing personality helped immensely to further her husband's career in the military. She will be remembered for her laughter, for always volunteering to help whenever it was needed, as a great mom, who was always there when her kids needed her. She had many pets throughout the years, and in one place they still talk about the redhead who walked the rabbit on a pink leash. She loved feeding the seagulls at the beach, the wild ducks at the country club, and the many birds that visited the birdfeeders in her yard wherever she lived. She had many nicknames, "Big Red", "Turkey", the "Bird Lady" and several others which can't be mentioned here.
She passed away March 13th, 2008, in Portland, Oregon. Her husband of 53 years and her daughter's family were at her bedside. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother and both of her sons. We have received many letters of condolence remarking on her wonderful personality an how she touched so many people's lives. She was the light of her husband's life and she will be greatly missed.
Her Social Security Number was 538-30-2336 WA. Living and Shirley Lou REGAN had the following children:
