Oregon Not as Safe a Refuge for Criminals as it Used to Be

Sheriff C H Dunn of Eau Claire county, Wisconsin, arrived here a day or two since in search of George Ackley, who, it is charged, while in the employ of an insurance company in Eau Claire county some four years since embezzled $1500 and fled the state. He succeeded in covering his trail so successfully that the detectives in search of him could find no clue. A short time since a man from Eau Claire visited Silver Lake, Washington territory, where he found Ackley, who had taken up a claim there and was living on it. He notified the authorities at home and Sheriff Dunn came out, but on going to Silver Lake found that Ackley was in this city, where he has been working for some time as a painter. Sheriff Dunn came here and by the assistance of Sheriff Jordan soon secured his man, and yesterday started East with him.
Ackley has a family living on his claim at Silver Lake. They have been undergoing all the hardships of pioneer life in that heavily timbered section.
