Block 10, Lot 19, Grave 1. OBIT: Elmer F. Ackley, 57, 1011 Second Ave., died Monday at Luther Hospital. He was born (1920) in Bloomer and lived in the Eau Claire area most of his life. He was employed by Phoenix Steel for 30 years and was married to Judith Hutshenruter. Surviving are his wife; a son, Randal, Eau Claire, a stepdaughter, Patty Ackley, Eau Claire; his mother, Mrs. Laura Ottsun, Sennett, Mont.; two brothers, Clarence, Jim Falls, Wilmer, Milwaukee; a sister, Mrs. Betty Gullickson, Bloomer; and two grandchildren. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Smith Funeral Chapel, with burial in Osseo Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral chapel from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
A 57-year-old Eau Claire man died of multiple internal injuries Monday afternoon after he was struck by a steel beam in a freak mishap that occurred in the 1100 block of Galloway Street shortly after noon. Elmer Ackley, 1011 Second Ave., was taken to Luther Hospital at 12:05 p.m., according to hospital officials. It was the first traffic fatality in the city this year. Police reported Ackley, an employee of Phoenix Steel Corporation, was helping unload steel beams from a flat bed truck at Uniroyal. The beam, 20 feet in length, was on a lift truck operated by Richard McMahon, 2228 5th St., a Uniroyal employee. Police reported a car driven by Mary Gilbertson, 60, of 503 Morningside Drive, was eastbound on Galloway. She swung around a stopped pickup truck and her auto struck one end of the beam. Officers said the impact swung the beam around and it struck Ackley, standing near the other end.
