HENRIETTA I. MEEK
GREENE - A funeral mass for Henrietta I. Meek, 70, of 510 High Street, will be
10:30 a.m. Monday, June 28, 1999, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greene, with
Monsignor Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery,
Greene.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene,
where there will be a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. followed by a rosary
service conducted by the Catholic Daughters of the Americas.
Henrietta Irene Ackley was born June 12, 1929, in rural Marble Rock, Floyd County,
a daughter of Harrison and Gertrude (Castle) Ackley, and died Thursday (June
24, 1999) at the Liebe Care Center in Greene, of cancer.
She received her education in the Marble Rock public schools, graduating in 1946.
As a young lady she worked at the Crabtree Restaurant in Greene.
On Oct. 2, 1947, she was united in marriage to Wayne Meek at St. Mary's Catholic
Church in Greene. They made their home in Greene until 1960, when they moved
to the home farm northeast of Greene. Henrietta helped farm and milk cows and
raise her four children. In 1976 they returned to town when Wayne started working
at the Farmers Coop and continued to farm.
In 1981, Henrietta started to work as a cook at the Greene High School until
her retirement in 1991. Henrietta and Wayne celebrated their Golden Anniversary
in 1997.
Henrietta's most prized possession were her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Throughout the years Henrietta and Wayne followed their children and grandchildren's
school and athletic activities.
Her interests included baking, bird watching, reading and crossword puzzles.
She will be remembered for her potato salad, angel food cakes, and popcorn balls.
Living family members include her husband, Wayne, of Greene; three sons, Jerry
and his friend, Joni, of Greene, Jim and his wife, Pat, of Dows, and Jeff and
his wife, Lisa, of Coon Rapids; one daughter, Jayne and her husband, Kenneth
Knapp, of Greene; eight grandchildren, Rob, Lisa, John, Rick, Jamie, Brandie,
and Dustie Meek and Heather Knapp; four great-grandchildren, Hayley, Dillon,
Brianna and Nathan Meek; two sisters and their spouses, Margaret and Lester Hurd,
of Nashua, and Beverly and Dick Woods, of Portland, Ore.; three brothers and
their spouses, Roger and Marie Ackley, of Chillicothe, Ill., Kenneth and Mickey
Ackley, of Dubuque, and Arthur and Mona Ackley, of New Hampton.
She was preceded in death by her son, Duane, in 1948; her parents; and three
sisters, Thelma Hayungs, Irma Snavley, and Wilma Marion.
