GARNER
Thelma Hayungs, 79, of Garner, died Friday (Aug. 30, 1996)
at Hancock County Memorial Hospital, Britt.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Paul
Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Clyde Kieschnick officiating.
Burial will be in Concord Township Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Cataldo
Funeral Chapel, 160 E. Fourth St.
Thelma Mae Hayungs, the daughter of Harrison and Gertrude (Castle)
Ackley, was born May 27, 1917, at Marble Rock.
She attended school at Marble Rock, graduating in 1935.
On Oct. 3, 1936, she was married to Claus Hayungs at Charles
City.
They farmed in the Floyd, Butler and Hancock County areas, until
1956, when they moved into Garner.
Thelma worked at Denny's Cafe, Lambert Meyer's Turkey Farm,
the Garner Locker, Hancock County Courthouse and Annex, and also
operated the Grill Cafe.
She enjoyed her family, friends, crocheting, gardening and especially
golfing.
She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, L.W.M.L., Knitting
Club and the Ladies Golf Club Association.
She is survived by her children, Ernist Hayungs and his wife,
Ione, of Clear Lake; Larry Hayungs and his wife, Emilie, of Carterville,
Ill.; Roger Hayungs and his wife, Mary, of Rolfe, and Donna Sonquist
of Harlingen, Texas; a daughter-in-law, Donnitta Hayungs of Garner;
18 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Arthur
Ackley and his wife, Mona, of New Hampton; Roger Ackley and his
wife, Marie, of Chillicothe, Ill., and Kenneth Ackley and his
wife, Mickie, of Dubuque; and three sisters, Margaret Hurd and
her husband, Lester, of Nashua; Henrietta Meek and her husband,
Wayne, of Greene, and Beverly Woods and her husband, Richard,
of Portland, Ore.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Claus Hayungs, July
31, 1982; a son, Robert T. Hayungs, June 26, 1991; a grandson,
Nick Perkins, Nov. 17, 1986; her parents; and two sisters, Irma
Snavely and Wilma Marion.
