Sarah Jane Ackley
MARBLE ROCK---Sarah Jane Asper, second child of Joseph and Prudence Asper, was born in Summit Co., Ohio, Dec. 25,1848. At the age of seven years, with her parents she left Ohio for Iowa in the old covered one-horse wagon, landing at Beeler's Grove in the fall of 1855. There was a family of five children, three brothers and two sisters, the older brother passed away the second year in Iowa. Her mother was a frail body, and not only the care of the younger children, but the household fell to her, which gave her the early training, for a wonderful, loyal neighbor and practical nurse. She received her early schooling in the old log schoolhouse and the old frame school building which stood on main street. At the age of twenty-one years she was united in marriage to Soloman Judson Ackley, a widower with one boy and two girls, whom she was ever ready to do for and care for in their early life. To this union were born two daughters and one son. Mr. and Mrs. Ackley took to covered wagon life in the west settling in Kansas in 1873, pioneering in that state for eight years, returning to Marble Rock in 1881, where the rest of a most remarkable life was spent.

Mrs. Ackley was left a widow by the death of Mr. Ackley in 1908. She and her daughter Minta staid in the home on a small acreage west of town for a short time, going later to the Will Ackley home to care for his mother, and remaining in the home after her death, making a home for him till his death in 1922. She then came to Marble rock which has been her home with the exception of four years spent in the Joe Ackley home, caring for his three motherless boys. From there she returned to Marble Rock, where she remained till called to her reward after four weeks of illness. Anxious for the summons, she peacefully rested in the arms of her Christ until the Spirit was carried to the Eternal Home, Jan. 26, 1936. Thus ended an earnest, loving life of eighty-seven years, one month and one day, full of joyful cares.

Left to mourn her passing are two daughters and one son, Miss Minta Ackley, Mrs. Nellie Arhart and Joe Ackley, five grandsons, seven great grandsons, one step-son Garrison Ackley. She also leaves one sister and three brothers. One sister and two brothers as well as her father and mother preceding her in death.
She was buried in Hillside Cemetery, Marble Rock, Floyd , Iowa.1 She appeared in the census 1870, 1900 & 1930 in Iowa. Notes for Sarah Jane Asper:
