Merl Edward Ackley quietly stepped into heaven Wednesday, March 24, 2004.
""Gramp"" loved his family and friends and enjoyed spending
time with them. He was born in Adrian on Dece. 23, 1913. In his younger years
he loved to hunt and fish and loved to tell the stories of his experiences in
the great outdoors to his grandchildren. He proudly served his country in the
National Guard during World War II. In 1995 his childhood sweetheart and wife
of 65 years, Leona Pauline Ackley, went home to be with the Lord. ""Gramp""
filled his days and evenings with music, playing his guitar and banjo. He loved
the old songs and often played for his family.
He will be missed by his daughter, Marge (Jack) Wilt; sons, Larry (Judy) Ackley
and Gary (Connie) Ackley. His grandchildren, Randy Wilt, Harley (LeeAnne) Wilt,
Rodney (Susanne) Wilt, Tammy (Mike) Hall, Todd Ackley, Dennis Ackley, Aaron (Karen)
Ricketts, Shawn Phibbs and (Rich Townsend), Jerry Ackley and Chad Ackley will
miss his stories and his special boiled dinner. ""Gramp""
also had 14 great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren and a special
niece, Susan (Earl) Garska. He will also be missed by his dear sister and companion,
Doris Biddix. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elzie and Myrtle Ackley;
a brother, Leeland Ackley; sisters, Mildred Barker, Frances Derbyshire, Helen
Pratt; and a great-grandson, Jason Howland.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 27, 2004, at 2:30 p.m. at the Anderson
Funeral Home with the Rev. David Bowering officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood
Cemetery. Visitation will be held today from 5-8 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral
Home.
