Joseph Eugene Acly born in 1860, came to Montana from Beloit Wisconsin, when he was a young man. He lived with a sister and brother-in-law for a while. He worked for C. M. Goodell's father out of Helena before coming to Philbrook.
Then he came to Philbrook and took up a homestead where the Ackley Lake is now. He made his home there and married Flora Montgomery in December 1887. They had four children, Grace, Glen, Sydnie and Irene.
He also took up a desert claim on the Judith River about three miles west of Philbrook, raised some cattle and horses, and hay and grain on the two ranches. he worked for other people in his spare time, breaking horses and riding in the roundup each fall. He passed away December 1924 and Flora passed away in Deer lodge in 1956.
All the recreation we hads had was what we make for ourselves. We had saddle horses to ride, which we spent many hours riding. We fished on the river and did a little trapping. Trapping gophers was not very profitabe as we got paid one cent for each gopher tail. We spent many hours in the boat on the lake in the summer time, and in the fall kept the stable filled with ducks for our meat. In the winter we did a lot of skating on the lake. Sometimes Dad would take his saddle horse and pull our sled with us on it all over the lake. That was real fun for us. We put in many hours sledding down the hill behind the barn and north side of the lake. Somtimes we would go out onto the lake, that make quite a long ride, but hard getting back to the top of the hill again.
When the Indians passed our way we watched them and sometimes played with the Indian children. Not too many Indians passed through where we lived as most of them went through up by Utica. That seemed to be their main trail. Lots of gypsies passed our place but we were afraid of them so didn't make friends of them.
We got most of our schooling in a log school house in Philbrook. Mattie Phillips was one of our teachers and we all liked her very much. When she was our teacher, the last Friday afternoon of each month we would play games, have spelling bees and dance. She and her brother, Walter, played for us to dance. He played the violin and she the organ. My sister, Grace, called the square dances or quadrills as they were called in those days.
Grace married Sherman Stiles of Moore, farmed for some time around Hobson and then moved to Snohomish, Washington. They had four children. Grace lives with her son and daughter-in-law in Snohomish. Glene moved to Washington with the Stiles family and worked out until his death in 1944.
Sydnie married Ernest Lee, a Hobson fellow, and they farmed around here for several years and then moved to Musselshell and farmed there. They are now living in Hamilton, Montana.
Irene married Graydon Lake in 1922 and they worked out around Lewistown for several years. Later they went to Deer lodge to work for the Williams and Tavenner Ranch and they are still there
