On the 15th day of February next, on the premises, will be sold, about one hundred
and eighty acres of valuable land, with a house and barn standing thereon, lying
in the town of Warren, and county of Litchfield, lately the property of Benjamin
Ackley, now belonging to the state of Connecticut: Said lands will be sold at
three months credit, on indisputable security being given; and any liquidation
securities of this state will be received in payment.

Mr. Ackley's grandfather, Benjamin Ackley, was a native of Connecticut and served
in the commissary department of the American department in the Revolutionary
war. He spent the rest of his life at Castleton, Vermont. His wife was Elizabeth
Buell

For many years after the settlement of the town, the people carried their dead
across the Connectciut River to Haddam for burial. Around the year 1700, a burial
procession was not able to cross the river because of bad weather. So they buried
their dead in the forest, a little ways back from the cove.

Revolutionary War--Mrs. Carter married, secondly, Major Benjamin Ackley, who
took her and her children, together with some of his own, by a former marriage,
to Castleton, VT., where her brother, Major Ephraim Buell, had recently settled.
At least three more children were born to her, all of whom lived to be very
aged. They were John A., Eleazer, and Orange Ackley. The former was once well
known in Cleveland, as was his son, John M. Ackley, late of Brewton, Ala., to
whose courtesy the writer is greatly indebted for valuable data concerning the
