VESTRYMEN
Brooklyn Rector, "Discharged," holds Al Fresco Service.
New York, Sept 11-When the parishioners of St. James Protestant Episcopal Church,
at Fiftieth Street and Fourth Avenue, South Brooklyn, reached the edifice for
morning serv1ce today they found this notice posted upon the door:
"The Rev. `William N. Ackley having been discharged by the vestry of this
church, notice is hereby given to the congregation thereof that the doors of
this church will be closed on Sunday, September 11, 1910, and until such time
as the vestry can provide a pastor In the place of the said Rev. William N. Ackley."
Dr. Ackley thereupon announced to the assembled crowd that he would hold services
from the church steps. He went into the house of a friend and, put on his, surplice,
and returned to read the service. All the, congregation stood except an old couple,
who were crying and two chairs were brought out for them to sit on. The regular
choir was present and the regular service held.
Dr. Ackley said that be had nothing to say concerning the charges made by the
vestry, but would await the action of the diocese of Long island. His friends
say that the vestrymen have no legal authority to discharge him, even if the
charges that they presented to' the diocese of Long Island might be true. They
characterize the allegations as preposterous

Vestrymen, He Says, Had No Right to
Discharge Mr. Ackley.
New York, Sept. 13-The Rev. William E. Ackley, of Brooklyn, who was forced by
a hostile vestry to preach from the steps of St. Andrew's Episcopal church yesterday
because the doors had been locked against him, found comfort today in the ruling
of Bishop Burgess of Long Island. Bishop Burgess said:
"The Rev. Mr. Ackley is rector of St. Andrew's Church; there is no question
of that. No vestry has any right to discharge a. rector. The vestry has not presented
any charges to me in accordance with canonical law, and I cannot recognize `charges
until they are' brought in this way."
The vestrymen charged that their rector had become Incapacitated by old age and
enfeebled mentality.

1910 in Mansfield, Richland , Ohio THE AGED PASTOR
Men and women do not of necessity have to be especially religious so that they
shall entertain profound respect for the clergy. In the newspapers a few days
ago a New York dispatch related how Rev. William N. Ackley, being locked out
of St. Andrew's Protestant Episcopal church, in Brooklyn, of which he had been
rector for sixteen years, conducted the regular services from the front steps.
The following pathetic words tell a memorable story:
Gathered around him, kneeling and with their heads uncovered, were 300 members
of the congregation, who do not agree with the parish vestry that their pastor
should be retired because of his age and feeble condition, mental and physical.
Order was perfect throughout the services.
An aged minister of the gospel, who has devoted his life to the work of trying
to rescue sinners and direct men to their highest duty, deserves better treatment
than this. The superannuated clergymen, just as the school teachers, need pensions.
They are providing for the loftiest needs of our life, and, in turn, should
in their old age be adequately provided for. The Presbyterian church has had
for many years and endowment fund for disabled or superannuated clergymen and
while the sum of money is not large it yet gives courage to the denominational
ministry.
An old pastor, who has been a good man - no matter what his faith may have
been- is about the best thing we find on earth: and in his later days he requires,
needs and deserves protection. He died on 27 Mar 1911 in Kings , New York.103,962,1539 He appeared in the following

Rector, Locked Out by Vestry, Dies Before Court Upholds Him.
New York, March 27.- Vindicated too late by the courts, the Rev. William Nicholas
Ackley, rector of St. Andrew's Protestant Episcopal Church, in South Brooklyn,
died at the rectory today only a few hours before Justice Marean in the State
Supreme Court, gave a decision upholding him in his fight against a hostile vestry.
Twice within nine months the vestrymen, demanding that Mr. Ackley resign, locked
him out of his church and he was compelled to preach from the church steps to
those of his congregation still loyal. He protested to Bishop Burgess, who upheld
his right to the pulpit, but the contention preyed on his mind, his health failed
rapidly, and today he died, his friends say of a broken heart.
