Enos, Roswell, and Preston left home as they could not get along with their
step father. Preston was about 14 when he left. They worked as loggers on the
Alleghany River and in 1857 headed west.
Mr. and Mrs. Preston Hotchkiss lived in the Dakota Territory until 1872 when
they moved to Colorado. While in Dakota they lived near Elk Point, South Dakota.
They settled in Saguache county when they first moved to Colorado. Walter Stanley
was born in Saguache in 1875. In 1876 they moved to Portland, Colorado. Alvinza
and Medora were born there. Portland is located in Ouray County. Vinzi (Alvinza)
was the first white child to be born in Ouray County. Preston and his brothers
ran a store at Portland. They also ran a saw mill there. Preston stayed in Portland
about ten years then moved to Colona where he ran a store and a farm. He built
a new home on the farm. Portland is supposed to be about four miles from Ouray.
The indians were there when they first moved into Ouray County. Ouray is named
after Chief Ouray. Preston Nallock HOTCHKISS and Sally Ann WHITCOMB were married

EDGAR ALVINZA HOTCHKISS PASSES AWAY AT COLONA HOME; WAS FIRST WHITE CHILD BORN
OURAY COUNTY
Another of the pioneers of the valley answered the last roll call Wednesday
night and passed to his reward, when Edgar Alvinza Hotchkiss died at his home
at Colona, after a long illness. He had spent some time in a local hospital
but was recently taken to his home where he passed away at 10:45.
"Vinzy" Hotchkiss, as her was known to his friends, was the first
white child born in Ouray County. He was born July 9, 1876 and had spent his
entire life in Ouray County. He received his schooling at Colona and one year
in Fort Collins.
For years he was engaged in the livestock business and in recent years was proprietor
of the Colona Mercantile store and Conoco station at Colona.
Hotchkiss is survived by his wife, Florence, five brothers and one sister:
S. A. Hotchkiss of Winthrop, Wash.; W. R. Hotchkiss of Telluride; Uri Hotchkiss
of Colona; Arthur Hotchkiss of Marion, Mich.; Walter Hotchkiss of Colona and
Mrs. Dora Bullington of Colona.
The remains are at the Montrose Funeral home awaiting funeral arrangements.
Deceased was a member of Uncompahgre lodge of Odd Fellows.
Arthur W. Monroe in an interview with Hotchkiss, March 28, 1934, for the Colorado
Historical society, wrote the following:
"The three Hotchkiss brothers came into Colorado at a very early date.
They were in the Lake City region as early as 1874, when they discovered the
Hotchkiss mine, which later became the Golden Fleece. Enos Hotchkiss was in Lake
City and about 1873 or 1874, Preston came over and established a store in the
town of Portland a few miles below Ouray. There his brother Roswell joined him
and there on July 9, 1876, was born Edgar Alvinza Hotchkiss, the son of Preston,
who was the first white child born in Ouray County.
"Besides his store, Preston Hotchkiss was engaged in the lumber and cattle
business. He furnished the first lumber for the buildings in Ouray. He has
sawmills in Happy Hollow, south of Ridgway and on Horsefly. E. A. Hotchkiss
went to school one year in Portland and lived in the sawmill camps in the summer
time. He has lived in Colona since 1883.
"Preston Hotchkiss had the following children: S. A. Hotchkiss of Winthrop,
Washington; Will R. of Horsefly; Uri of Colona; Arthur of Michigan; Walter of
Montrose; E. A. of Colona; and Mrs. Dora Bullinton of Colona. Each of these,
with the exception of E. A. have children.
"Roswell Hotchkiss has three children, two boys, Virdi L. and Charley and
an adopted daughter, Mrs. Rosa McCoy. Enos had two families. In the second
were three boys, Fred and Clair of Hotchkiss and Adair of Grand Junction, former
district attorney.
"E. A. Hotchkiss and his brothers are famous as bear and mountain lion
hunters. One winter they caught 36 mountain lions. They got two in one day
just four miles from home.
"E. A. Hotchkiss was married in 1912 to Florence Henry and they had two
children, both deceased now."
Deceased was a well known resident of the valley whose many friends are saddened
by his passing
