Biography of1309 George W Ackley. of Pulaski township, Jackson county. He is at present in his eighty-fourth year, while she is only a few years younger. They have been married fifty-seven years, and if longevity is the reward of honor bestowed upon parents, their progenitors were certainly unusually honored.
George W. Ackley is a native of New York, having been born in Seneca county. November 11, 1819. In his native county he grew to manhood, receiving a fair common school education and in early life se lecting agriculture as his vocation. In 1846 he was united in marriage to Miss Almira Yale, a native of Seneca County and a descendant of Governor Yale, of Connecticut, one of the early patrons of Yale College. New Haven, and the man after whom the college was named. For a number of years after his marriage Mr. Ackley prosecuted his labors on the farm and so successfully that he amassed enough means to justify him in coming west and investing in some of the fertile acres of Jackson county, Michigan. It was during the early 'fifties that he arrived in Jackson county and he immediately invested in one hundred and sixty acres of good land in Pulaski township, a part of section 21. Here he and his wife have resided for upwards of half a century. Prosecuting their farm work until the weight of years admonished them to desist. From their very modest beginning they have added to their earthly stores, year after year. Until at the present time they are very comfortably situated financially and can well afford to accord to themselves that quiet peace and comfort which should be the invariable reward of a well spent life.
Eight children, of whom six are yet living, were born to Mr. and Mrs. Ackley. viz: Mary C., deceased; Cordelia M., wife of James A. Taylor, of Colorado; Underhill J., of Antrim county, Michigan; Philander G., of Litchfield, Michigan; Hiram C., deceased; Newton J. a brief account of whose career is given below: Clara A.. widow of A.
