Report That Charles L Ackley Was Killed in Rest Camp Evidently a Mistake

Painted Post, N Y Sept. 16-
Mr Arthur M Roy. Wellsboro Pa;
Dear Sir; Am writing this to correct a mistake made in announcement of my husband's death. Private Charles L Ackley, of Westfield. The Agitator stated that he was killed while in a rest camp. Whoever sent in that notice was mistaken, for we have received no word from the government to lead us to believe that. All the telegram contained was that he had been killed by a “charged wire” but no details were given nor have we received any as yet, except a letter received from him written the day he was killed, and it shows he was on active duty and had been doing quite a bit of night work in No Mans Land and I think must have come into contact with the wire while on one of these trips at night.
Am enclosing his letter and wish you would please print it and ask other papers to please copy. Very Truly Yours, Mrs Chas. L Ackley, Painted Post, NY RD 2.
On active service with the American Expeditionary Force, Aug 2, 1918- My dear wife; Just a few lines to let you know that I am well. And hope this letter will find you the same. I got a letter from grandfather the other day.
We are still on active duty. We don't know just when we will be relieved; but hope it will be soon. I have been doing a little night and day traveling in No Mans Land of late. The boys in our division have done some good work along this line. Hunting for machine guns and strong points in the enemy's front.
The Allies have had a wonderfully successful drive. The Japanese troops are on their way across Siberia. I expect them to do wonders. But am beginning to think that we will winter over here, as nothing definite can be reached in so short a time. We all hope that it will be over soon.
All the Old Timers around Westfield seem to be dying off.
Hoping to hear from you soon, will close with love to all, Charles (Pvt Charles L Ackley, Co. H, 60th Inf Reg 2nd Battalion, A E F via N Y C
