Hayden Wheeler, the veteran express messenger, died this morning at 4:30 o'clock
at his home, corner of Academy and Little avenues, aged to years.
He had been sick since last Friday. He was found to be suffering when he started
to take his train- at Port Jervis and was removed to a carriage when the train
arrived here. On reaching his home it was found he was suffering from a stroke
of apoplexy. He was unable to speak and never recovered his speech except to
say a word or two. For three days before his death he was entirely paralyzed
on his right side.
The deceased was born in the town of Warwick, May 3, 1821. His parents were
Joel Wheeler and Elizabeth Rogers. He was the youngest and last surviving of
six children as follows: Lucinda, wife of Horace Thompson; Nathan, Mary, wife
of Abram Nanny, and Henry and Harrison, all of the town of Warwick. Mrs. Thomas
Ferrier, of Catskill, and John Vanderoef, of Delaware county, who are both living,
a half brother and sister of the deceased, and Zebulon W Vanderoef, of Florida,
and James Vanderoef, of Montgomery, are step brothers of the deceased.
The deceased was married May 22, 1845, to Joanna Ackley, who was a daughter
of Augustus A Ackley. She survives him, also four children, Hannah, wife of
Dr E W Deyo, of Montgomery; Alice, wife of Farren W Hayes, of this city; Josie,

infancy and a daughter, Julia, wife of Conductor Wm L Davenport, died in Port
Jervis about a year ago.
After his marriage he followed farming for a few years. When 28 years of age
he entered the employ of the Erie. This was soon after the construction of the
road and when it started from Piermont. He served the company as brakeman, baggage-master
and conductor, at one time being in charge of the Middletown Way train. He was
with the company for 13 years. For the past 30 years he has been an express
messenger for the different companies that have been operating over the Erie,
the United States, Erie and Wells-Fargo. Altogether he has traveled up and down
the Erie for 43 years. He was very regular in his work, and was sick but a very
few times during all these years.
He made his home at different points along the line of the Erie for some time,
but for the past 35 years he has resided in Middletown. He was a quiet and good
citizen, and will be greatly missed, especially in his family.
The funeral will occur at his late residence Saturday afternoon, and will be
conducted by Rev. Charles Beattie, of the Second Presbyterian Church, of which
the family were regular attendants. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery. Joanna
