Death of Mr. John Atherton, Sr.
"The sudden death of Mr. John Atherton, father of Hon. Gibson Atherton,
which took place at the family homestead, in Newark Township, on Tuesday afternoon,
about 3 o'clock, was a sad surprise to his many friends and acquaintenances in
Newark. For several months past, Mr. Atherton has been in declining health, but
not so much as to give his family and friends any uneasiness, until some three
or four days previous to his death. On Tuesday afternoon he felt so much better
that he got up from his bed, dressed himself without assistance, and walked out
on the porch, where he remained for some time. His son, Rev. Augustus Atherton,
advised him to return to his bed, which he did, and soon after, went to sleep.
After a time, his son, noticing him resting so quietly, attempted to arouse him,
but the vital spark had fled. He died without a struggle. Mr. Atherton was born
in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, July 10, 1800, and resided there until 1816, when
he removed with his fathers family to Ohio, and settled on the farm where he
died. In 1821, he married Clarissa Ackley, whom he survived several years. His
funeral takes place from his residence today, at 2:00 P.M., under the auspices
of the Masonic Fraternity, of which he was long a faithful member, having attended
the last meeting of the Lodge on the evening of May 6". Clarissa ACKLEY
and John ATHERTON Sr had the following children:
