Whiting, Maine (UPI)- Two men and a woman were shot to death today in what
authorities called a double murder and a suicide in this tiny Washington County
town.
The sheriff's department at Machias identified the dead as Albert Richardson,
74, Aubrey Ackley, 45, and Mrs Eunice Ackley, 52, whose husband Howard died about
one week ago.
Authorities were not sure immediately what relation Mrs Ackley was to Aubrey
Ackley.
A neighbor reported the deaths to the sheriffs's department at Machias. No
other details were available immediately. He appeared in the following News
Article from the Chronical Telegram on 6 Jan 1960 in Elyria, Lorain , Ohio
DOWN EAST TRAGEDY LINKED TO LONELINESS
WHITING, Maine (UPI)- "Down Easters," as they call rural Maine folk,
aren't much for small talk of show. A "yup" or a "nope"
can answer most any question put to them by outsiders.
Down Easters aren't ones to display their emotions on their sleeves either.
But it's usually there, hidden beneath a leathery New England reserve.
Albert Richardson was like that. Spare, slightly bent from years of digging
clams and quahaugs (chowder clams) where the Atlantic Ocean rippled up to this
northeastern Maine hamlet- 10 miles from the Canadian border- the 74-year-old
Richardson wasn't a talkative person.
He had led a lonely, solitary life. He had few close friends.
One of them was Howard Ackley, with whom he had boarded for seven years. Ackley
died eight days ago after a brief illness. Richardson said little at the time,
but felt as though he had lost a part of his life.
Richardson was waiting Tuesday at Ackley's widow's house for her brother-in-law
to drive him clam digging. The brother-in-law Aubrey Ackley, 45, was late.
Richardson began to fidget. Then things seemed to press in on him. Still no
ride. Howard Ackley wouldn't have been so late, Richardson may have thought
to himself.
Finally, Aubrey appeared, but by then it was to late. Normally quiet Albert
Richardson was blind with rage. He grabbed a .45 caliber automatic pistol and
a 30-30 rifle and started shooting.
" Richardson had been very upset since Howard Ackley died" said Sheriff
Raymond J Tracey later. " When Aubrey failed to pick him up at the time
he promised, the old man just blew up
"
A few minutes later, Mrs. Eunice Ackley, 52 and Aubrey Ackley lay dead from
Richardson's barrage. A few yards away in a woodshed, was Richardson's body
with a self-inflicted rifle shot in his head. He was buried in Jan 1960 in Whiting,
Washington , Maine.618

man honored with Boston Post Cane
EDDINGTON- It all began in 1909 as the brainchild of Boston Post publisher
Edwin A Grazier, who picked up several hundred canes at an auction.
The canes were made of African ebony with 14-carat gold heads. He devised
a plan to give out some 700 canes to the states of Maine, Massachusetts, New
Hampshire and Rhode Island.
Initially, the cane was given to men only. It was not presented to women until
the 1930's- long after Grazier had died.
Today, the Town of Eddington keeps its original Boston Post Cane in a special
glass case. A replica of it has been made by Peavey Manufacturing Co. for the
Eddington Historical Society. This cane, along with a plaque commemorating the
event, is presented to the recipient by the historical society.
This year the cane was given to Clayton Roy Ackley by Eddington town manager
Russell Smith. Ackley was born in Cutler on May 7, 1915. He received the Boston
Post Cane on his 90th birthday.
His parents were Ezra Allen Ackley Jr and Annie Eudora Davis. The youngest of
12 children. 7 sisters and 4 brothers. One sister, Marguerite Allison Ackley
Graf resides in California.
Having lost his hearing at a young age, Ackley received his education at the
Baxter School for the Deaf.

they had two children: Allen Clayton Ackley of West Virginia, who is retired
from the U.S. Navy; and Gail Ackley Hodgins, who married Harold Hodgins and has
since died. Mrs. Ackley died in 2001.
Ackley has seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Through his mother's family, Ackley is descended from a passenger on the Mayflower.
He is the fifth great -grandson of Nicholas Ackley, who settled in this country
in the 1600s.
Ackley worked as a woodsman, clammer, lobsterman, road construction worker
and a shoe factory employee. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and
fishing. He has lived in Maine all of his life, moving from Washington County
