Sad Drowning Accident at Ausable Chasm
C. T. Ackley, a well known and very estimable citizen of Peru, and a brother-inlaw
of Mr. E. S. Arnold, was drowned at Ausable Chasm last Saturday afternoon. A
party of relatives, including Mr. and Mrs. Ackley and daughter, Mrs. Arnold,
(mother of Mrs. Ackley,) J. E. Arnold and daughter, who are on a visit from the
West, John Arnold and family, E. S. Arnold, Miss Sarah Arnold, and possibly others,
had enjoyed a picnic at Baggs' butternut grove. After dinner they visited Ausable
Chasm, Mrs. Ackley and her mother returning to Peru. The remainder of the party
made a tour of the Chasm, with the exception of Mr. Ackley with his little daughter
Mary, eight years of age, who drove down the east side to wait for their arrival
at the foot of the Chasm. The party expected to be about two hours going through.
At 4:45, Mr. Ackley, perhaps becoming little uneasy, or fearful u) for their
safety, took his little daughter, and proceeded along the river in the direction
from which they were coming. Reaching a shelving rock which projects over the
stream, he told his daughter to remain where she was, while he climbed on this
rock, to get a better view up the river. In making this attempt, he slipped and
fell into the water, a distance of about six feet. The river at this point is
narrow, and fifteen or more feet deep. Mr. Ackley could not swim. He rose to
the surface but once. The boat was not many rods above, and the guide, caught
a glimpse of him as he came to the surface, while the party heard the terrified
screams of the child. A stranger, said to be one of the stage drivers, attracted
by the child's screams, hastened to the spot, and tried to reach a pole to him
as he was struggling in the water, but the distance was too great. When the party
in the boat arrived, they were powerless to save. None of the men were accustomed
to diving, and what seems a little strange not a man could be found around the
Chasm or the Lake View House who could dive. It was 6:15 before the body was
rescued, it being brought to the surface by means of grappling hooks. Mr. Ackley
was about forty-five years of age, and was generally known in connection with
the marble manufacturing business, in which he had long been engaged. He had
a host of friends, and we think few if any enemies. The funeral was held at Peru
village Tuesday, and was very largely attended. Business was suspended in the
village during
the services. He died of drowning on 22 Aug 1882 in Ausable Chasm, Clinton,
