Oshkosh, Winnebago, Wisconsin INDIANS COPY WHITE MAN'S ELECTION FOR
GOVERNING OF TOWN
Nashville, Wis.- (UP)- Representative government, on the white man's model,
was established among the lost tribe of Chippewa Indians at Sakaagon
reservation near here Wednesday with community's first election.
Sole candidate for town chairman was the tribe's present chief, Willard L Ackley.
Henry L Smith sought the office of vice chairman. Peter McGeshick ran for treasurer.
Two councilmen were chosen from a list of four candidates. The poll was expected
to total about 60 votes.
The Sakaagon group of Chippewa were designated the lost tribe many
years ago after the Chippewa defeated the Sioux in a battle in this vicinity.
A small band of Chippewa settled near here to make their homes away from their
tribesmen. They became known as the lost tribe. He died on 2 Nov

He Sokaogon (Mole Lake) Band of Chippewa Indians.2027 In the early autumn when the leaves begin to change
color, the Sokaogon Indians of Mole Lake make their way to Rice Lake, and one
of the last remaining ancient wild rice beds in the state of Wisconsin. The annual
harvest of wild rice, an essential part of the Indian diet, has altered very
little in the hundreds of years that the Sokaogon have lived here.
Sokaogon means "Post in the Lake" people, because of a spiritual significance
of a post -- possibly the remains of a petrified tree - that stood in Post Lake
nearby. The Sokaogon Ojibwe are also known as the Lost Tribe because the legal
title to the 12 mile square reservation from the treaty of 1854 was lost in a
shipwreck on Lake Superior. The band, under the leadership of Chief Willard Ackley,
finally and after a long struggle, received federal recognition and reservation
status in 1937. The Sokaogon (Mole Lake) Band enjoys three beautiful lakes either
on or adjacent to the small reservation: Mole Lake, Bishop Lake, and Rice Lake
which lies at the headwaters of teh Wolf River
The Mole Lake Casinos and Bingo are located seven miles south of Crandon on Highway
55, 30 miles east of Rhinelander, and offer live entertainment and dancing, full
service bars, a cafe, an ATM machine, check cashing booth, 12 blackjack tables,
and over 500 slot machines. The Casinos are open every day from 10 a.m. until
3 a.m. The Mole Lake Smokeshop offers cigarettes, gas, diesel, groceries, wild
rice and Indian crafts.
The Mole Lake area boasts hundreds of miles of snowmobile trails, as well as
hiking and mountain biking trails, ATV trails, and cross-country ski trails.
There are over 800 lakes, 82 trout streams and 400,000 acres of public wilderness
land teeming with wildlife in the vicinity. If you are looking for bald eagles,
they are easy to spot soaring above the village of Mole Lake and nearby lakes
and streams

3/4 by Chief Willard Leroy Ackley and Alice Ackley Randall
Early in the 1700s our band of Chippewas migrated down from Madeline Island
in the Lake Superior area. This information is taken from a talk given by Alice
Ackley Randall in 1968, the next year after she was given the honor of being
made "Indian Mother of the Year in 1967" for the state of Wisconsin.
Chief Pizhiki (Chief Buffalo) of Madeline Island died Sept. 7, 1855, buried
there, might be a forebearer of our Chiefs.
