BRIDGEPORT CHURCH GETS NEW PASTOR

BRIDGEPORT - The Rev. Charles W. Ackley will become pastor of the Bridgeport Methodist Church on Sunday. His appointment by Bishop W. Ralph Ward was announced over the weekend through the office of the Rev. Donald G. Wright, Syracuse' District Superintendent. He succeeds the Rev. William G. Cruikshank, .who recently was named pastor of Rockefeller Memorial Methodist Church in Syracuse. Since mid-1966 Mr, Ackley had been occupying the dual post of pastor of Rockwell Methodist Church, Nedrow, and associate pastor of St Paul's Methodist Church, Syracuse. Previous to that, he was for six years a staff member of the New York State Council of Churches with responsibility for work with migrants and institutional chaplaincies, Charles W. Ackley was born .in Lockwood. He attended Brothers College of Drew University, Hartwick College, and Yankton College, Yankton, S D.T receiving an A.B. degree from Boston University School granted the degree of bachelor of sacred theology in 1943 from Boston University School of Theology. He began his Central New York Conference ministry in 1943, serving at Millerton, Pa., Montour Falls, Mecklenburg, South Otselic and Warners before going to the State Council post in 1960. Mrs. Ackley is the former Frances Tripp of Rockdale, Married in 1937, they have two children: Joyce (Mrs. B. Conrad Bush), of Hamburg, and John C., a student at State University of New .York at Morrisville. Ackley, 88, a retired United Methodist minister and Pastor Emeritus of Waverly United Methodist Church, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004 in Springville, N.Y., after a long illness.
Born in Lockwood, N.Y., to parents Bertha and Alvah Ackley, he attended schools in Chemung and Waverly, N.Y. He graduated as salutatorian in 1933. He attended college at Drew University, 1933-34; Hartwick College, 1935-36; and Yankton College, Yankton, S.D., 1938-40, where he received the A.B. degree. For his graduate work, he attended Boston University School of Theology, 1940-43, graduating with a Master of Divinity degree.

In 1935, he served as pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Churches at Lockwood, North Barton and Barton, N.Y. In the intervening years until his retirement, he served as pastor in many churches throughout central New York as well as several churches in North Dakota, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. From 1960-62, he served as the Director of Migrant Ministries, and from 1962-66 as Director of Institutional and Migrant Ministries for the New York State Council of Churches.
For several years from 1944 on, he was assistant treasurer of the Central New York Conference of the United Methodist Church. He was also chairman and executive secretary of the Town and Country Commission, chairman of the Board of Social Concerns and chairman of the Committee of Christian Relations of the Syracuse Area. He was the manager of the first camp held at Casowasco after its opening in June 1946 and director of Junior High Camps for a week each summer for several years.
While pastor in South Otselic, N.Y., he received the John Oberlin Award for rural church service from the Town and Country Department of the New York State Council of Churches.
He was a Past Master of the South Otselic Lodge, No. 659, F&AM.
Survivors include: his wife of 66 years, the former Frances Evelyn Tripp; a daughter, Joyce A. (Conrad) Bush of West Falls, N.Y.; a son, John C. (Diane) Ackley of West Hempstead, N.Y.; a sister, Alice (Ronald) Chandler of Waverly; two nephews; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a sister, Florence Suffern, wife of Donald, of Waverly.
Family and friends may call Monday, Feb. 9 from 7-9 p.m. at the Blauvelt Funeral Home, 445 Waverly St., Waverly.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Feb. 10 at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Waverly with the Rev. Anne Bey Canfield, pastor, officiating.
Burial will be in the spring in Prospect Park Cemetery, Sidney, N.Y.
