Suffern, 84, of 105 Elm St., Waverly, N.Y., passed away on Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003 at Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre, after an extended illness. Born Jan. 19, 1918 in Lockwood, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Alva and Bertha Meissner Ackley and wife of Donald (Cy) Suffern. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Waverly. She was a registered nurse and had graduated from the Robert Packer School of Nursing in Sayre in the Class of 1941. She had retired as magistrate of the Village Court, Waverly, after 35 years. She was a member of the Cantata Singers in Elmira, N.Y., for 26 years. She directed three hand bell choirs at the Methodist Church in Waverly. She enjoyed knitting and weaving. She was an avid camper and enjoyed many white water trips on the Colorado River. She is survived by: her husband, at home; one brother, Charles Ackley of Troy, Pa.; one sister, Alice (Ronald) Chandler of Waverly; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Friends may call Tuesday, Jan. 14 from 7-9 p.m. at the Luckner Funeral Home, 449 Park Ave., Waverly. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Waverly with the Rev. Anne Bey Canfield officiating. Interment will be in Lockwood Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
