Christmas Gifts Are Destroyed

CORTLAND- Eight persons, were left homeless yesterday when a fire of undetermined origin, destroyed a tenant house on the Claude Rorapaugn farm near South Cortland. Four children and a man, who were in the house at the time of the fire, escaped safely.
Evidently starting in an attached garage, the fire was discovered by Bobby Ackley, 9 year old son of Mr and Mrs Robert Ackley, who was with his father in the barn. Calling his father, they ran toward the house, accompanied by Stanley Butler, another employee.
The four Ackley daughters, Doris, 16, Irene, 13, Elizabeth, 11, and Beverly, 9 were warned in time to escape from the house. Ackley and Butler assisted Ackley's father, Walter Ackley, 65, to escape.
Ackley then called the Homer Fire Department, but the house was blazing by the time the firemen arrived and efforts were confined to wetting down outbuildings to prevent the spread.
Mrs Ackley, an employee at the Newton Line Company in Homer was notified and after returning home she and the children were taken to the tenant house occupied by Robert Stone, nearby.
All of the children's clothes were destroyed as well as all of the house furniture, but Mr Ackley was able to save some of the adult clothing. The children's dog is missing, but it is not known whether he ran away or whether he was in the house.
A number of war bonds were also destroyed by the fire, but the numbers are on file and they can be replaced. Burned with the house were 2,000 pounds of potatoes belonging to Rorapaugn.
All of the children's Christmas presents were lost. The two oldest girls attempted to get upstairs and save some of them, but smoke and flame forced them out of the house. She enjoyed camping, puzzles and spending time with family. Doris is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Bruce Orton of Richford; son and daughter-in-law, Dana and Kathy Wilson of Titusville, Florida; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Nicole and Jason Mathews of Candor; grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Chad and Kendra Orton of Owings Mills, Maryland; great-granddaughter, Emily Orton of Owings Mills, Maryland; brother, Robert Ackley of Richford; sister, Beverly Wood of Richford; sister, Irene Prindle of Homer; aunt, Alma Bossard of Newfield; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Elizabeth Brown. Calling hours will be held on Saturday, December 29th, 2007, from 1-2 p.m. at the Allen-Manzer Funeral Home in Spencer. A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be donated to ones charity.
