For Lost Fishermen

DRAGGING OPERATIONS for two missing Syracuse fishermen who are presumed to have drowned early yesterday in Skaneateles Lake were called off this morning because of rough water caused by the high winds. State troopers together with Skaneateles police and a score of volunteers were forced to give up dragging this morning when winds whipped up five to six foot waves. Corp. Merrill Zapf of the Elbridge state police substation identified the missing men as Clifford S. Ackley, 55, of 126 Holland St., and Clarence L. Forsythe, about 45, of 110 Marion av., Fairmount The men, both employees of Syracuse State School, left home for the fishing trip about 12:30 A.M. yesterday. Ackley's car was found in the Jones Beach parking lot. It was identified by Mrs. Ackley, Zapf said.

FIRST INDICATION that the men may have drowned came when a lake shore resident spotted a capsized boat near the west shore about 11 AM. He notified police. Nicholas Maturevitz of E. Lake rd. said he noticed the sun shining on the- boat bow about a mile across the Jake from his home. Using binoculars Maturevitz saw what he first thought was a person, clinging to the boat, bobbing up and down in the water. Later, however, he learned the object was a red, five-gallon gas can. Troopers and local police went cut in a boat planning to drag the area yesterday afternoon, but [were forced to turn back by the wind-whipped water. Five - foot waves nearly caused the police boat to overturn.

DESPITE A light rain and tough water, authorities planned to start recovery operations this morning. Zapf said workers would begin dragging the section near the west shore where the boat was found. The water there is between 60 and 100 feet deep. The 14-foot boat the men were believed to be using was recovered when it drifted near the shore. It is owned by Harry D. Jones, Jr., operator of Jones Beach and a boat livery. He said he usually allowed fishermen to take his boats early in the morning before he got up and they pay him the $2 fee when they return. Police said a 16-horsepower motor and an anchor, owned by the men, were still attached to the boat when it was recovered. Jones said the motor may have been too heavy for that size boat He appeared in the following News Article from the Syracuse Herald Journal on 11 Aug 1955 in Syracuse, Onondaga , New York RITES FOR ACKLEY, LAKE VICTIM, FRIDAY
