From an un-named newspaper (circa 1935):
Mrs ACKLEY Spends Life in La Grande
Daughter of Missouri Emigrants Visits in Redmond
by Lucy Lenora Andrews
Mrs. Martha Akley, 72, who is visiting her granddaughter Mrs. K. Woll, lives
in La Grande. During her long career as a practical nurse, Mrs. Akley has cared
for at least 300 mothers during childbirth, she says. In the La Grande vicinity
there are at least 200 men, women and children whom she dressed for the first
time in their lives, she says.
Mrs. Akley's parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Lane, were born in Iowa where they grew
up as schoolmates. After they were married they moved to Jackson county, Missouri.
For some reason which Mrs. Akley does not recall, her father was not drafted
to serve in the Civil War. At the time the Lanes had a number of small children.
Vicious dogs which the Lanes had on their Missouri farm kept soldiers on foraging
trips from taking what provisions the family had.
LANES JOIN TRAIN
At the close of the war the Lanes were among the thousand persons who made ready
to leave in one long wagon train to Oregon. There were 350 or 400 wagons, all
drawn by oxen. Many of the several hundred cows driven along the first part of
the route had to be put into service drawing the wagons, as a number of the oxen
died.
The Lanes had two wagons, and when the train left Kansas City it was one of the
best equipped caravans to make the trip West. Every precaution was taken against
Indians. The train passed by places where smaller groups had been slain, and
many gruesome sights met their eyes. They saw dead bodies and remains of burned
wagons, but because of extreme caution were not attacked by the savages.
Several times the cattle were stampeded by the Indians, but otherwise no delays
occurred.
FEATHER BEDS RIPPED
At Green river the travelers saw what was left of a small train which had been
wiped out by Indians. The savages, not knowing what to do with the settlers'
prized feather beds, had ripped them open, and feathers were still blowing when
the long Missouri train passed by.
The Lanes stopped at Boise, Idaho, where they spent the winter and it was there
Mrs. Akley was born. In the spring of 1865 when Martha Lane was very small, the
Lanes went on to Oregon, settling in the La Grande country where their children
were reared.
La Grande's first house was built in 1861, and the town grew very slowly as settlers
trickled into the wheat country. Martha Lane went to her first school in a little
log school house called Hillside. Her father had La Grande's first blacksmith
shop, building it when the town consisted of but one store and a small hotel.
Martha Lane married John D. Akley, a carpenter, who built the town's first church.
Mr and Mrs. Akley reared 10 children, all of whom were born in La Grande. Mrs.
Akley has 32 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She tells many interesting anecdotes of the town's early days. She recalls visiting
at the home of Congresman Walter M. Pierce when his children were young.

Notes: As far as I know, the family always spelled their last name "Ackley."
In spite of this article's claim that Martha was born in Idaho, other sources
say that she was in fact the first woman born in La Grande, her birth date being
December 3, 1864. She died 31 Dec 1952 and is buried in La Grande where she lived
her entire life. John Denzil ACKLEY and Martha Bell "Pat" LANE had
the following children:
