Lulu Maude ACKLEY⁸ was born on 16 Oct 1882 in La Grande, Union , Oregon.^6,7,17 She appeared in the census in 1900 in Oregon. census has name as Luke M She died on 8 Jan 1976 in La Grande, Union , Oregon.^17,18 She was buried in Grandview Cemetery , Union , Oregon.¹⁹ Her Social Security Number was 543-52-2892 OR.¹⁷ Her Obituary appeared in the⁸ Lulu Maude Burnett, 93, of 701 4th St., died Thursday in Portland.

The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. at the First Christian Church.

Mrs. Burnett spent her entire life in La Grande. She was born here on Oct. 16, 1882, the daughter of Martha and [John] Denzil Ackley. She married Oliver Burnett Oct. 21, 1900. He died in August of 1930.

Mrs. Burnett was a lifetime member of the First Christian Church and was the oldest living Gold Star Mother. She was chosen to dedicate the flag pole in the Veteran's section of Grandview Cemetery.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Alfred (Lois) Martens of Portland, and Mrs. Robert (Crystal) Fossum of Orem, Utah; four sons, Lynn of West Point, Calif., Earl of Hermiston, Howard of Portland, and Dallas of Long Beach, Calif.; three sisters, Faye Ryckman of Oregon City, Velva Cornforth of Boise, Idaho, and Carrie Glascow of Jefferson. There are 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-granchildren.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Coffey's Funeral Chapel. Friends may call at the chapel until Monday noon. Rev. Jack Hart will officiate at the services. Vault interment will be at the Grandview Cemetery.

From a letter dated Friday, May 13, 1960

"Here is something that I thought of and wrote to Vivian [another
daughter]; my father's father, Ransom Ackley, was a member of the
Mason's Lodge. I remember after his death, when I was 6 or 7, papa and
mama put away all his nice gold cuff links and pin and rings with the
lodge marks on them. so then, his wife Nettie Ackley, on in life,
married Nylic Lewis's father, old Henry Lewis, after the mother of all
[the] children had died. There were Ernest, Preston, Mollie, and Grace,






the eldest was William. And later he (Henry?) married Net Ackley."

From a letter dated Nov 1972

"Yes, that picture of my uncle George Ackley which you have is my
father's brother. His name was George W. Ackley. He was a tall man. My
father John Denzil Ackley had two sisters, Hattie McLetchie and another






sister who lived in Bridgeport, Connecticut. They both had owned oil
wells. But they are dead now.

In a letter dated 14 Feb 1970:

John Denzil's father was Ransom Ackley from New York, N.Y.

Ransom Ackley as a Carpenter and Joiner. I would
have rejected this as our guy, since he seems to have been a blacksmith,
but it looks like he may have been multi-talented. This is from "Taffy

"While your mother[Martha Belle--remember this is addressing Lulu] was
busily engaged in rearing a family and managing the home, complete tothe
making of lye soap and putting the sparkling white wash on the
clothesline by 4:30 a.m., your father and grandfather [this would be JD






and Ransom] were carpentering. The first church in La Grande was built
with their help. Also many homes and other buildings were constructed by them

"The only Ackleys I knew was Ransom, the man with the B[lack] S[mith]
Shop in Old Town La Grande. He died when I was 6 years old. Now I am
young at 90 years. Ha!!"

Lulu Maude ACKLEY and Oliver Franklin BURNETT were married on 21 Oct 1900 in La Grande, Union , Oregon.^4,7,8 Oliver Franklin BURNETT (son of William Franklin BURNETT and Susan MOORE) was born on 3 May 1875.¹⁸ He died on 15 Aug 1930.¹⁸ He was buried in Grandview Cemetery , Union , Oregon.¹⁹ Lulu Maude ACKLEY and Oliver Franklin BURNETT had the following children:
