. HENRY MARTYN PERRIN.-Hon. Henry Martyn Perrin, senior member of the old and
reliable law and real estate firm of Perrin & Baldwin, and one of the best
known and useful men of Clinton county, died at his residence in the north part
of the village of St. Johns, at 10:10 o'clock Tuesday night, January 7, 1896,
from catarrh of the stomach and bowels and nervous prostration, in his sixty-seventh
year. His failing health dates from the time of the railroad disaster south of
Rochester, N. -Y., August 10, 1889, in which his daughter Ella. was killed, and
he himself was more or less shocked and injured. Since that sad event, while
he has been able to be about and attended to his various business cares the principal
part of the time, he has shown signs of failing health and wasting away. Mr.
Perrin was a typical representative of the old school, quiet, firm, reserved
and dignified, but with one of the most kind, considerate natures that could
be found. He had been identified with the financial interests in Clinton county
for nearly forty years, and his friends are legion. His thoughtful, warm hearted
deeds will be remembered by many of the old settlers and early pioneers who are
indebted to him for repeated courtesies and the oft extended hand of help in
times, when the way looked dark. His counsel was not only valuable from; business
standpoint, but he sent many a man from his office with a resolve to conquer
or die after one of his firm, determined and always sincere bits of advice. Conscientious
in the extreme he was the very embodiment of honesty and inspired everyone with
confidence in all that he said and did. Nor was this confidence even for a moment
ever subjected to the slightest doubt. Few men have ever lived who so thoroughly
enjoyed the entire esteem of every one with whom they came in contact, as Henry
M. Perrin. He was public spirited and St. Johns is in no small way indebted to
his generosity. He was born at Berlin, Washington county. Vermont, June 23, 1829,
and remained on his fathers's farm until he reached the age of seventeen years,
when he entered Thleford, Vt., academy, where he graduated, and he afterward
attended Dartmouth College and graduated with honors. During the time he attended
Thleford academy he was fitting himself for Dartmouth and had mastered the freshman
year, passing an examination and entering the sophomore classes. Strange as it
may appear, this was all accomplished unknown to his room mate. He afterward
studied law at the Albany law- school, and then read law in the office of Judge
Amory Kinney, at Terre Haute, Ind. He moved to Detroit in 1855, where he resided
two years. In the fall of 1857 he caime to St. Johns, where he has since resided.
In 1860 le was elected judge of probate and served a four year term, after which
he was elected State senator. He had held various positions; been town clerk,
supervisor, village president, councilman and was often asked to take public
positions which he declined. He was a Republican in politics, although he was
a believer in free trade and very conservative in his views. He was married to
Mary Ackley in 1862, and two children were born to them, Ella E. and Mrs. Dr.
Palmer. Besides these he leaves four brothers, J. Newton Perrin, of Berlin, Vt.;
George K. Perrin, of Indianapolis, Ind.; Wm.. Perrin, of Nashua, Iowa, and Porter
K. Perrin, of St. Johns. He was the seventh of eleven children.
