Carlyle has said that biography is the most interesting as ~ve1l as the most profitable study of mankind. There are few lives that do not furnish their lessons, and the record of Mr. Ackley is rich in those traits of character which command respect and are well worthy of emulation. - He did not rise to a position in political, military or business circles that has commanded the attention of the world, but in his home community he so lived that all men honored and respected him and he left the impress of his individuality for good upon Battle Creek and her people. He was born in Convis Township. Calhoun County. September i6. 1863. his parents be­ing George W. and Frances (Mudge) Ack­ley. The father was born on the old home farm in the same county near the Ackley lake. a body of water named in honor of the family, for the grandfather was a pioneer settler there. Throughout his entire business career George Ackley has carried on agri­cultural pursuits and still makes his home in Convis township.
In the public schools Howard L. Ackley began his education, which was continued in Olivet College. Later he read law with the firm of Rollin & Morse. , one of the lead­ing law firms of Detroit. but because of fail­ing eyesight, prior to the time for examina­tion, he had to abandon his hope of entering professional life. Returning to his native county. he then learned the blacksmith's
trade and conducted a shop in Tekonsha, where he met with success, combining me­chanical skill with good business ability. He was a man highly respected by all, and his strong force of character and upright prin­ciples won him the regard of those with whom he came in contact. In 1897 he re­moved to Batavia. Branch county, where he again opened a blacksmith shop, conducting the business there until his death.
On the 20th of March. 1888, Mr. Ack­ley was united in marriage to Miss Jennie L. Sackett. of Bellevue. Eaton County, Mich­igan. a (daughter of George S. and Rachel (Hetchler) Sackett. Her father was born in Massachusetts and is descended in direct line from King Henry and also from Ethan Allen. the famous Revolutionary commander of the Green Mountain boys The grand­father, Nodiah Sackett. Of Massachusetts. Established large flouring mills in that state. George Seymour - Sackett. whose middle name ~'as given him because he was de­scendent from the Seymour family, came to Michigan as a young man and located near Mount Clemens. where he engaged in teach­ing. A large number ot the representatives of the family became successful teachers and were noted for strong intellectuality, while other members were identified with agricul­tural interests. George S. Sackett was joined in wedlock to Miss Hetchler. who was horn in Pennsylvania and is of German lineage. Establishing his home in McKean county he there spent his active life as a farmer and later lived retired in Bellevue. where his last days were passed. His widow afterward departed this life in Barry County. Michigan. Their daughter, Jennie, spent her girlhood days in Massachusetts and enjoyed the advantages of the excellent public school system of that state. Later she
went to Bellevue. Michigan, where she suc­cessfully engaged in teaching until her mar­riage. Unto Mr. and Mrs. Ackley were born four children: Rexford H., Robert S., Grace. Lucile and Kathleen M. Mr. and Mrs. Ackley were members of the Methodist Episcopal church. and while residing in Tekonsha he took an active and helpful part in church work, acting as usher for more than two years and contributing in large measure to the growth of the organization. He car­ried his Christianity into the everyday walks of life, living in harmony with his profes­sions. Socially he was connected with the Knights of the Maccabees and was trustee of his lodge for two years. In politics he was a Democrat, and while deeply interested in the success of his party, he was never an aspirant for office, although he served as marshal of his village. His deepest interest centered in his family and he found his greatest enjoyment at his own fireside. He was devoted to the welfare of his wife and children and considered no personal sacrifice on his part too great if it would enhance their happiness. He passed away August 20. 1898. but his memory is enshrined in the hearts of those who knew 'him, and is espe­cially (dear to his family, who always found in him a devoted. considerate and kind husband and father.
