Allied Headquarters in North Africa, April 3,-- (AP)-- Five American airmen of a Mitchell bomber reached safety after being shot down at sea, clinging to a rubber raft for 12 hours and going half starved and footsore for four days as they dodged through enemy lines in Tunisia.
A sixth crew member, a gunner, was killed in action during the air fight, and sank with the bomber. But the bullet-riddled Mitchell destroyed two German planes for certain before it was downed, the survivors reported.
The Mitchell, with Lieut. Albert Duke of Baltimore Md., and Lieut. James Ackley of Pittsburgh, as pilot and copilot, participated in a successful attack on an enemy convoy last week that sank a 10,000-ton liner, believed to be carrying troops, and damaged several other vessels.
