Life Dates
Born June 19, 1925 in Keystone, OK., to Dennis & Alice Ackley. Graduated from Sinnett Elementary school in 1943. Married Rosemary Kirkwood September 20, 1948. Graduated from Northeastern State College in 1962 with a BS in Education and a Masters of Education in 1966. Survived by three children, six grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. His three Children are: Mary Cross, of Lake Charles, LA., Cathy Coulter, of Bull Head City, AZ., and Bill Ackley, Jr of Tacoma, WA.
Bill was an amazingly diverse man with many talents. Many of us knew him as a school teacher. Many may not know that prior to that, Bill was very welder. He also worked as a heating and air-conditioning technician and as a cook.
Bill was diverse even within the teaching profession. He started teaching at Nowata in 1962 as a Biology teacher. After a few years there, he became a math teacher for the Pawhuska Jr. High and High School. He also taught Physics and at one time, Electronics at the vocational school. Bill retired from the Pawhuska school system in 1986.
Bill's diversity was most revealed, however in his hobbies. He was a ham radio operator. But, he just didn't operate radios; he liked to build radios - completely from scratch. His son, Bill Jr., remembers many trips to junk yards to salvage old TV sets. The parts were used to build the radios. Neighbors that lived near Bill probably remember the large ham antennas that he loved to build and tinker with.
Bill was an accomplished private pilot. Over the years he had four different airplanes.
Hi most accomplished flying incident was when he landed his cousin's airplane on the Will Rogers turnpike between cars after the propeller had broken.
In later life, Bill became a musician, borrowing from his early years of violin training to become a fiddler, joining the local fiddling association.
Bill enjoyed people. He was always quick to help a neighbor fix their TV when they had radio interference, even when the interference was from a CB radio and not his ham radio, sometimes even fixing them when technicians couldn't.
In his classes, he loved to inspire his students by conducting interesting experiments ; such as, dropping eggs out of his airplane to determine maximum velocity, or driving a car through a tight corner without steering, at a calculated speed to prove centrifugal force or calculating how much dirt was needed to fill in the rail road track ditch by the school.
Bill lived a very full and rich life. We wish him a fond good bye. He was buried in Pawhuska City Cemetery, Pawhuska, Osage , Oklahoma.²⁴ His Social Security Number was 445-26-3708 OK.
