Martin Maxwell Ackley, 85, of West Fork died Saturday at Washington Regional
Medical Center at Fayetteville. He was born Oct. 31, 1917, at Pryor, Okla., to
Jesse Martin Ackley and Ruth Anna Wright. He was a Navy veteran of World War
II. He was a member of Zinnamon Community Church. He was preceded in death by
his wife, Lavada Ackley; a son, John Martin Ackley; a brother, Harry Ackley;
and a grandson. Survivors include a son, Henry E. Ackley of Prairie Grove; six
daughters, Ruth Montgomery and Holly A. Thomas, both of Springdale, Beverly Hite
of Conway, Easter Keith of Phoenix, Sheila Landelius of West Fork and Carol Owens
of Prairie Grove; 15 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Luginbuel Chapel of Prairie Grove
with Dion Edwards officiating. Burial will be at Prairie Grove Cemetery.

to Jesse Martin Ackley and Ruth Anna Wright. He was preceded in death by his
wife, Lavada Ackley, who died in 1994, and one son, John Martin Ackley, and one
grandson, Nathan Hill. He was a member of the Zinnamon Community Church and
a former resident of the Strickler community. He was a Navy veteran of World
War II. He was 85 when he passed away at Washington Regional Medical Center
in Fayetteville, AR

military WW II in the US Navy.4,38 Martin, called "Skiv"
by everybody, joined the Navy 9 September 1939. He left Galveston, TX in February
1943 aboard the LCI 70 (Landing Craft-Infantry) and arrived at New Caledonia
about six weeks later.
He was promoted to CPHM (Chief Pharmacist Mate) in 1943. The LCI was converted
to a Gunboat that year. To quote Skiv; "After that, the war was no fun".
They participated in the Solomons Campaign and he spent the last year of the
war on recruiting duty in Jackson, MS. He considered staying in the navy after
the war but finally decided to buy a farm just south of his grandmother Duffield's
place and be a farmer.
In 1948 he and Lavada bought a farm north of Pryor and his father, who was
divorced, came to live with them. In 1953 they bought a farm in West Fork, AR
which is their current residence.
They have cattle and also raise thousands of chickens under contract with the
Campbell Soup Co.
