Lucille ACKLEY4 appeared
in the census 1900 & 1910 in Pennsylvania. 1910 census lists first
name and middle initial as Lucille M She was born on 10 May 1887 in Pennsylvania.4,116,117 On 28 Apr 1910 she was a department
store time keeper at Munhall, Alleghany , Pennsylvania.117 She was living in 1910 in Munhall, Alleghany , Pennsylvania.117 living with mother 1910 She
died on 19 Feb 1987.4 She
was known as Lucille by most people.
She was what we would today call a "Sparkplug", judging by some of
her activities. She was instrumental in getting Henry Ford to take the Ackley
Bridge for his Greenfield Museum. She had to persuade him and Thomas Edison to
come look at it and then further persuasion was required to get him to take it
Even though the bridge had been constructed as a community project, primarily
financed and built by Joshua and Daniel Ackley, she had to cajole Greene County
to sell it to her for a nominal fee so she could give it away. She won. Please
refer to the Addenda Section for details concerning the bridge.
She returned to the Ackley homestead (Joshua's house) in 1935 from Pittsburgh,
PA. The house had been vacant for several years and therefore required considerable
restoration work. She raised the foundation about four feet, adding a basement
and, judging by before-and-after photographs in the possession of Lois Guthrie,
she removed a considerable amount of add-on construction at the rear of the house.
She also added a small stoop at the front of the house. The following is an excerpt
from a letter Lucille wrote 19 March 1961 to Sarah Geraldine (Burns) Jennings
:
"It is true I am in business In Graysville, the firm is Coflield and Carroll,
I am the C end. We handle building material, and contract the School Transportation,
for this district. Along with that I am a Justice of the Peace and a Notary Public,
manage the house and small farm, must say time does not hang heavy on my hands."
In another part of the letter she states that she is Regent of the Daughters
of the American Revolution. At one time she organized a large group of local
citizens to get the road by the house designated as part of the National Road
but she lost that battle. I saw a photograph of the gathering and there appeared
to be about 200 people.
In 1945 she arranged a family reunion and at that reunion a monument to Sarah
Jane Ackley, her great grandmother, was dedicated; Lucille designed and paid
for its construction. Please see the Addenda Section for further details of the
reunion and the monument.
She was an accomplished pianist and had composed and published some music. Her
good friend, Helen Vogt, who has written and published several books and is a
remarkable woman in her own right, told me that "Lucille was a remarkable
woman." indeed!.
