The following is an excerpt from a letter dated December 1963 from Ida McColIom
to Eva (Baker) Childers:
"Carl has bought them a trailer. Ethel is in such bad shape.
I am worried to death. Carl's taking her to a doctor and he is putting shots
in her spine. He tells them it is arthritis - but he told me it is hardening
of the arteries in the back of her head. Carl has heart trouble awful bad. Ruby
(Carl's sister) called me this morning and said he was cementing a place for
his trailer and (he was going) to work another year."
Excerpt from a letter date 10 February 1971 from Ida McColIom
(in Stockton, CA) to Eva (Baker) Childers:
"Ethel is still alive - that is about all you can say for
her - she just screams until she gives out and goes to sleep. When she wakes
up the same thing over again. Never says a word She don't know when we go to
see her. I can't hardly stand to go and I can't stay away."
Ethel died 10 months later.
