PORTLAND - Phyllis (Martin) Ackley, 90, passed away peacefully on Monday, Oct. 11, 2004.
She was born in Biddeford on April 7, 1914, a daughter of George and Delia Fletcher Martin. Phyllis graduated from Old Orchard Beach High, and continued on to Gray's Business College of Portland.
She was married to her husband of 43 years, Otis Ackley on April 24, 1937. Together they raised two beautiful girls. Mrs. Ackley has lived in the Portland area all of her married life, and worked as a Claims Processor for Howard A. Pearce and Associates for 25 years.
She enjoyed following politics and the news, she was an avid fan of reading and crossword puzzles, she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren, and in her younger years she spent her free time drawing portraits of movie stars. She was loved by everyone who met her, and she had a great sense of humor that kept everyone around her laughing until the very end.
Phyllis was predeceased by her loving husband, Otis, on July 20, 1980, as well as a sister, Naomi Wood in May of 1993, and a brother, Rudy Martin in August of 2002.
She will sadly be missed by her daughters, Janice Rae McLaughlin of Gorham, and Lyndell Joan Schick of Pensacola, Fla.
Phyllis is also survived by her wonderful grandchildren, Alyson Marie Knox and her husband Daniel of Falmouth, Douglas Neal McLaughlin of Portland, Frank and his wife Debbie Schick of Georgia, Donald and his wife Michelle Schick of Pensacola, Fla., and Greg and his wife Lea Schick of Pensacola, Fla. She also leaves behind seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Visiting Hours will be held from 3-7 p.m., on Friday, Oct. 15, at Hay & Peabody Funeral Home, 749 Congress Street, Portland. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., on Saturday, Oct.16, also at Hay & Peabody Funeral Home, with the Pastor Richard Male officiating. Burial will follow at Brooklawn Cemetery, Portland.
