Welcome to the home page for the St. Helens Girl Scout Neighborhood! We are just getting settled so we'll be adding lots more later!
St. Helens is a small town of about 8100 people located 30 miles Northwest of Portland, Oregon. We are conveniently near the big city, but still have many of the small town values and sense of community. St. Helens is located along the mighty Columbia River. We are across the river from Mt. St. Helens the volcano, although we did get ash when the volcano erupted on May 18, 1980.
There are approximately 150 girls and adults in the St. Helens Neighborhood. A neighborhood is a geographic designation similar to a service unit. The neighborhood is led by a service team, which in turn gets guidance and a assistance from the Council. We are part of the Columbia River Girl Scout Council. Click here to find our more about our council.
Our Neighborhood include approximately 14 troops. Together, we have lots of activities. In a typical year, the neighborhood sponsors one activity each month for all the troops. Activities include a weekend camp, me and my guy dance, overnighter for Thinking Day, roller skating party, canned food drive, caroling, and our ceremonies of Investiture / Rededication and Court of Awards.
Our neighborhood, 4-3, is called Wah-Kee-Nah. Wah-Kee-Nah was a Yakima Indian princess. There is a waterfall in the beautiful Columbia River Gorge named after her. Her name even translates as "most beautiful." That is what we try to teach our girls in Scouting...each one can be beautiful.
