Shattered Dreams

I watched you sign your simple name~

It fit your simple heart.

You signed it with a blood red pen.

Now your hell would start.

I watched you sign your life away

With fifty other men,

And then I watched you board the train,

And knew it would never end.

Your letters told of glory;

Between the lines of dreams.

Yet you were just in training,

Not thinking of blood red streams.

Your nightmare had just started.

You'll see your comrades fall,

And even if you win the war

You'll hear their voices call.

I cannot understand your need

To uphold your country's honor.

For what has been so clear to me

Will surprise and leave you somber.

For even if we win, you lose.

With Death there is no victor.

There's no excuse for men fighting men

For no reason more than power.

My love, please come back to me soon

And leave your foolish fancies.

No good will ever come of war.

Stop taking stupid chances.

Now in my hand I hold a note,

In my heart~a cold hard fear.

I have not heard from you in weeks.

The thought brings more than a tear.

The notice is a telegram;

It's from the war department.

It says you drew your final breath

With honor and a brave heart.

You wondered why I hated war.

My father and now you.

Men fighting men has done nothing for me

Except leave me alone without you.
