1. SARAH1 ZIEGLER was born April 23, 1815, and died March 30, 1873 in Pennsylvania. She married WILLIAM BEAVENS.
Notes for WILLIAM BEAVENS:
The following is taken from "The Governor Mifflin Area History
Book Two by the Governor Mifflin Historical Society:
WILLIAM BEAVENS born: 7 April 1816 died: 5 December 1890
by Paul L. Beavens
The Beavens' Families are of Welsh descent arriving in Pennsylvania around the year 1700 and settling in Philadelphia and Chester Counties. In trying to trace the Beavens' family, we found two William Beavens ---- one passed away in 1786 and the other in 1791. There was also another William Beavens that operated a Pub in Philadelphia, and George Washington visited this Pub a number of times. However, we are unable to find any records of the father of William Beavens 1816 - 1890.
WILLIAM BEAVENS arrived in Berks County in 1838 and bought a farm in Northern Brecknock Township. The atlases of 1861 and 1876 show maps of Brecknock Township stating that his farm of 36 acres had a never failing spring. William was a farmer and a boot and shoemaker, a trade he followed all his life. He married Sarah Ziegler 1815 -1873, and seven children were born to this union. We will follow the life of Jacob Ziegler Beavens, his son in 1843 - 1929.
JACOB BEAVENS learned the trade of boot and shoemaker from his father and also worked on the farm. He remained on the farm with his father after his brothers and sisters left. About 1871 he married Mary Trout. To them were born Emmaline 1872 - 1873 and Samuel 1874 - 1840. Mary (Trout) Beavens passed away in 1876, only 25 years old. Jacob then married MARY JANE MATZ, 4 May 1878. Mary was born in 1855 and passed away in 1933. Jacob and Mary Jane were the parents of the following: Susan and Mary Ann (twins) 1879, Susan's year of death is unknown and Mary Ann died in 1961; Sallie 1880 - 1956; Maggie Amanda 1883 - 1884; Jacob (Matz) Beavens 1886 - 1959; William H. 1887 - 1961; Henry H. 1890 - 1966; Lillie May 1891 - 1891 (four months and thirteen days old); Bertha E. 1892 - 1959; John 1894 - 1959; Martin L. 1895 - 1969; and Amos 1897 - 1979.
In 1885 with his father ailing, Jacob Z. took over the farm and also began a new line of work - basket weaving. At that time, basket weaving was a trade pursued by only a small number of people, and Jacob was only interested in making shoes and booots for his family of 12. He became an expert in basket weaving, and now he was teaching his boys the trade. By 1900, his son Jacob (Matz) Beavens became his best helper and by 1910 all of his sons were basket weavers. Every Saturday morning Jacob Z. would load up the wagon and sell baskets in two sizes, bushel baskets, half-bushel baskets, peck baskets, half-peck baskets and also market baskets. Jacob Z. and Jacob M. now went into dyeing willows for market baskets. They were red, white and blue. They would dye the willows by means of steam boiler. The willows would become very hot and soft and the dye would penetrate them. THe door to door selling of baskets became very tiresome. Jacob contacted the hardware stores of Reading and was able to sell an entire load of baskets to one store; and then to several stores, including general stores. Soon his baskets were sold all over Berks County. By 1927, the basket trade stated to fall off due to baskets being brought in from Mexico and the Central Americas. These baskets were inferior to the Beavens' baskets, but they were cheaper, adn they had to work with little profit to compete.
Jacob Z. passed away in 1929, and in 1930 Jacob M. Beavens made the last basket in Brecknock Township. There are still a few baskets around that were made in the Beavens' log cabin -- which was their shop. One of Henry's baskets belongs to Pearl Beavens Weitzel and the other belongs to Paul L. Beavens, Henry's son. A third market basket that was made by Jacob Z. for Geneva (Paulsgrove) Fisher was given to Paul L. Beavens (her cousin).
In 1923 Samuel, Jacob's oldest son, bought the Homestead and told his parents that they could remain on the property as long as they lived. Jacob Z. passed away in 1929 and Mary Jane passed away in 1933. Sam had built a home behind the Homestead in late 1923. In 1937, Chester, son of Samuel, tore the half log and half frame house down. I am sure there are many Beavens's baskets around, because they were made so strong. Sonny Foltz, the auctiioneer, turned a Beavens' bushel basket upside down and stood on it during a sale in Cumru Township in the early 1930's.
There also were other basket weavers in Brecknock Township. The Blimlines were basket weavers, and they used a different method. It appeared they were not quite as strong as the Beavens' basket. And then there was Marty Springer, who was a basket weaver, but he used all split white oak. Springer was the only black person I know that could speak Pennsylvania Dutch, and I loved to talk with him. He lived on the Stauffer property in Maple Grove Park.
Although the Beavens' family had stopped weaving baskets in 1930, every once in a while they would make a basket just to see if they could still do it. I know that Henry made a basket from willows from a tree instead of the tame willows taht grew from a bush, and he said it was a hard job. In 1975, Amos Beavens gave Paul Beavens 17 willow slips to plant at his home and 15 slips grew. So Paul now has tame willows. He just might try his hand at weaving a basket. However, Paul is a stairway builder and has built close to 4,000 of them; and at age 70, it is a little hard to take on another trade.
On Beavens Road the Goho family bought a large piece of the farm. Later, Chester Beavens built a home on Blimline Road, and after that Richard and Eugene Ruffner, grandchildren of Samuel Beavens, built homes on Beavens Road. This reduced the farm from 36 acres to 24 acres. Eugene was put in charge of the farm, and in 1978 he sold the farm. This broke our hearts! The farm was in the Beavens' family for 140 years -- so ends six generations of the Beavens' on Beavens Road!!
The following was taken from the History of Berks and Lebanon Counties, 1844 by I. Daniel Rupp:

Valuation of articles for tax for 1844, $148, 131.00; County Tax $296.26; State Tax $179.14. The first tax collector was Jeremiah Seemor, no date.
In 1729, Chester County was reduced by erecting Lancaster County out of it, and the Indians still owned land here. Lancaster County's east boundary was the Schuylkill River. So, Brecknock and Cumru were in Lancaster County until March 11, 1752, when Berks County was erected from Chester, Philadelphia, and Lancaster Counties. Now Berks County extended to the foot of Trostle's Hill, adn the people wanted to keep the name of Brecknock for their township. That is why there is a Brecknock Township in Berks County and one in Lancaster County. The most northern point of Brecknock Township is on the Earl Blimline property on Beavens Road. Mr. Blimline is teh fur dealer. The greatest length of Brecknock Township is seven miles; mean breadth is about two-and-one half miles and contains ten thousand acres of land.
It is interesting to note that Brecknock Township was once Chester County, then Lancaster County and finally, Berks County. We do not know when the first settlers arrived in Brecknock Township, but we think it was around 1700. By 1810 when the first census was taken, the population was 495.
And now back to basket weaving -- there are a few Weavers in Lancaster County and a few in Berks County, and you will find them a the local arts and crafts shows. These all came after the Beavens' baskets no longer were made.
In closing, we hope you enjoyed reading this history of the Beavens Family and Brecknock Township.

THE FRANKHOUSERS
by Viola Sweigart Beekey
July 14, 1990
If you are my cousin, you already know taht Anna Frankhouser, our grandmother, married Daniel Ziegler Beavens, our grandfather.
Anna was the daughter of John Frankhouser born: Feb. 23, 1832 died: Feb 8, 1869 and Maria (Weaver) Frankhouser born: Dec. 17, 1833 died: Sept. 7, 1916. Grandmother, Anna Beavens was born: Dec. 12, 1859, in Lancaster County, Pa., on a farm near Fivepointville where my mother's uncle Sherman later lived. I have a picture of the house, taken one day when I took either Mother or Aunt Bessie for a ride. Nora, Minnie and Ella were also born on the Frankhouser homestead. Later, Anna and Daniel moved to a farm near Gouglersville, Pa., which is familiar to all of you.
Anna had four brothers: Lot, John, Fremont, and Sherman Frankhouser. All were teachers before taking up other occupations. Anna was very smart and clever as a young girl and once took the exams to teach school as her brothers had done. However, Lot found out about it and at noon time told her to drop out. He discouraged her from completing the exam, and she obeyed him.
Lot later lived on S. Sterley Street in Shillington, Pa., sold real estate, loaned money to others, was a Justice of the Peace, etc. He had a daughter Florence, who never married and was a hat designer. She had a millinery store and always wore her own creations. Florence died at the U.C.C. Retirement Village in Myerstown, Pa., where Aunt Bessie also resided. I last visited Florence about 1982, shortly before she died and was buried in Mohnton. Lot's sons Alger and Earl were still living in 1982.
John W. Frankhouser, had a doctor's office in Mohnton. He is buried at Gouglersville next to aunt Irene Moyer. He had a son, Dr. Agnew F. Frankhouser, who practiced medicine for 38 years in Lebanon and Lancaster Counties. Agnew was an Army veteran of World War I, and a daughter Melba survived at the time of his death Aug. 7, 1978.
Fremont ("Freman" as Mother called him) was a physician in West Reading after he quit teaching. He is buried in Charles Evans Cemetery in Reading, Pa. His first child, a son, was in a special school because of an abnormal condition. A daughter, Olive, died of Typhoid fever at the age of 18 adn is also buried at Charles Evans Cemetery in Reading, Pa. near the second entrance on the 5th Street Highway near the cremation building.
Sherman Frankhouser born: Oct. 11, 1867
died: Mar. 2, 1955 lived across the fields from my uncle Peter Sweigart's
place at Fivepointville near Terre Hill, Pa., on the old homestead
farm. He is buried in the Terre Hill Cemetery.
REMEMBRANCES of DANIEL and ANNA'S homestead at Gouglersville, Pennsylvania.
As a child I recall picking strawberries for 1/2 cents a box and 1 cent as I grew bigger. Grandpa would hobble around on his cane inspecting our boxes and seeing that we were careful of his berry plants. A number of you cousins also picked berried there. For lunch we had huge strawberry short cake, and we also had ham and string beans for lunch or dinner.
Those Thankgiving dinners with my aunts, uncles, and 20 - 30 cousins present are unforgettable. After the big dinner, the children would go out and play "hide and seek" in the barn area amidst the animals homes. Uncle Agnew always joined us. I don't recall uncle Clarence playing with us, but he helped unearth the apples buried in a pit in the ground and covered with straw. We also had chestnuts in those days.
Anna's mother Maria lived with Lot, her son, in her later years. My parents took Maria along on a day's outing toward Kutztown or Allentown, Pa., in the early days of the automobile. Maria could not get out of the car as a big area of goldenrod bothered her so much. If any of you are allergic to goldenrod, you no doubt inherited it from her. I was only eight years old when great - grandma Maria passed away. Both she and her husband are buried in the Terre Hill Cemetery.
Anna spent her last years living at times with some of her daughters. She passed away at the home of Aunt Bessie Gelsinger on 18 Oct 1945, and is buried in the Mohn's Hill Cemetery next to her husband Daniel Z. Beavens and sons Clarence and Agnew. Her daughters Gertrude, Cora, Ella and Nora are also buried close by, while Bessie, Irene, and Minnie are buried in the Wyomissing Cemetery at Gouglersville, Pa.
And so this brings to and end the family of Anna (Frankhouser) Beavens and Daniel Ziegler Beavens and their nine children, but many heirs survive and some are renewing friendship today.
I would welcome any information you can give me regarding Frankhousers. Also, please inform me if any of this information is incorrect. I acquired it by listening to and questioning Aunt Bessie and my mother during the last ten years of their lives.
I want to thank all of you who so faithfully
gave me your family history on the Daniel and Anna Beavens side.
I have organized all except the Snyder family, and I plan to do that next.
Paul Beavens, his wife, and I visited the Gouglersville cemetery recently,
and I now have the names of a few earlier ancestors so that I can again
proceed with the genealogy.
