Lewistown Hospital. She was born May 29, 1918 in Milroy, Mifflin County,
a daughter of the
late William and Clara [O'Donnell] Carter. She was preceded in death by
her husband, Ray E.
Ammerman, June 14, 1975. She is survived by one son, Stuart E. Ammerman,
Mifflintown; two
daughters, Mrs. R. Lee [Alice C. Ime and Mrs. Herman [Janet A.) Leach,
both of HC 67,
Mifflin; two sisters, Sylvia Carter and Catherine Gahagan, both of Lewistown;
two
half-brothers, William Carter Jr., Lewistown, and Daniel Carter, Milroy
RR; three
half-sisters, Dorothy Bennett, Millheim, Patricia Carter, Camp Hill, and
Shirley Hayes, Erie;
one stepbrother, Charles McCellean, Lewistown; 13 grandchildren; and 18
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Stella May Ammerman, March 25,
1936, and one half-
brother, Latefield "Sammy" Carter. She retired in 1981 with 36 years of
service as a cutter
for the Arrow Shirt Factory, Lewistown, and had served as the treasurer
of Juniata County for
one term. She was a member of the Church of God, Harrisburg. Funeral
services were held
Monday at Brown Funeral Home, Mifflintown, with Rev. Harold N. Imes officiating.
Burial was
in Lost Creek Presbyterian Cemetery, McAlisterville. Memorial contributions

Ann Gilbert,

R. Baker of Mifflintown. He was preceded in death by two brothers and two
sisters. He was a
1947 graduate of Yeagertown High School and was a U.S. Army veteran of
the Korean Conflict.
He had worked for 20 years as a driver for Gulf Oil. He was founding pastor
and a member of
Milroy Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, where he served as pastor
for the past 26
years. He was also a PIAA football and basketball official. 'Funeral
services were held
Thursday at his church, with Rev. Milton Henry officiating. Burial was
in Woodlawn Cemetery,

Medical Center. He was born December 8, 1950 in Ickesburg, Saville Township,

son of David S. and Lena Yocum Baughman of Ickesburg. He was an Army veteran
of the Vietnam
War. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and New Bloomfield
VFW Post No. 7463.
In addition to his parents, be is survived by three brothers, Richard E.

Elliotsburg, L. Baughman of Ickesburg and Harry F. Baughman of Donnally
Mills; and three
sisters, Patty Palm of Ickesburg, Donna J. Radle of Ickesburg and Mary

Oak, formerly of Millerstown, died Saturday,
March 15, 1997, of asbestosis at Riverside Extended Care Facility. Mr.
Beasom was a payroll
clerk for Phoenix Steel Corp., Claymont, DE for 31 years until it closed
in 1987. Later, he
worked for the YMCA of Delaware as a payroll coordinator, retiring in 1992.
He was a member
of Tennis Lodge 371, Thompsontown; Lafayette Lodge 14 AF&AM, Wilmington,
DE; Scottish Rite
Consistory, and the Nur Temple, New Castle, DE where he served as past
president of the
Ritual unit. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. Surviving are
his wife of 43
years, Mary A.; son, Richard L. of Wilmington; brothers, Leonard and Wayne,
both of
Millerstown; and sisters, Helen Vogel of New Bloomfield and Jean Dum of
Elliottsburg. The
funeral service was held March 19 at Gebhart Funeral Home, Claymont. A
Masonic service was
also performed. Burial was in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Chesapeake
City Road,

McAlisterville. Her hobbies were sewing, growing flowers, pruning shrubs
and traveling. The

Berlin. He is survived by his wife, Wanda Fogleman Berlin, whom he married

1955. Also surviving are two sons, Ronald V. Berlin of Port Royal
and Daniel H. Berlin
of Mifflintown RR3; two sisters, Patricia DeVore and Barbara Tucker, both
of Elkhart;
and two grandsons. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving
on the USS R.A.
Owens during the Korean Conflict. He retired on disability from Blue Valley
Industries,
Port Royal, in 1980. He was previously employed as a route salesman for
KaVee Dairy,
Belleville. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Mifflin.

is the last of his
immediate family, having been preceded in death by two brothers, Brooks
and John Burdge, and
a sister, Donna Snyder. He is survived by several nieces and nephews. He
was a member of
American Legion Post 265, Hummelstown, a life member of V.F.W. Post No.
710, life member of
Middletown Hunters and Anglers, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge No. 382 and
East End Democratic
Club. He was a retired steelworker, having been employed for 40 years by
Harrisburg Steel.
He was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the Southern Philippines,
Luzon and
New Guinea and the 1st Calvary Division - l6th Quartermaster Squadron.
Funeral services were
held Friday from Henry Funeral Home, Honey Grove, with Rev. Sharon Landis
offiiciating.
Interment was in East Watertord Cemetery, where full military honors were
conducted.

at his home. He was Born September 6, 1946 at Lack Township, Juniata County,
a son of
Florence Jones Burdge of East Waterford RR1 and the late Ralph F. Burdge
Sr. In addition to
his mother, he is survived by two daughters, Stacey Lipka of Mifflintown
and Angela Burdge of
Mifflin, and one grandson. He was preceded in death by a sister, Carol
Burdge Cummings. He
was a teacher at Monroe Elementary School, Richfield, for the past 27 years.
He was a 1964
graduate of Juniata Joint High School and a 1968 graduate of Shippensburg
University, where
he also received his master's degree. He was a member of St. Stephen's
Lutheran Church, Union
Lodge No. 324, Free & Accepted Masons, and the Pennsylvania State Education
Association.
Memorial services were held Monday evening at Aldersgate United Methodist
Church,
Mifflintown, with Pastor Judy Rowles officiating. The memorial service
was followed by a
Masonic service conducted by Union Lodge No. 324, F&AM. Memorial contributions

her companion of 16 years, Harry Wetzler, July 17, 1989. She is survived
by one son; Larry E.
Bowersox of McAlisterville RR2; two brothers, Roy Bowersox of Mifflin
and Paul Bowersox of
Liverpool; two sisters, Linda Bornman of Duncannon and Rosella Watts of
Halifax; two
grandsons; and one great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by one
granddaughter, Linda
M. Bowersox, and one great-grandson, Joshua R. Bowersox. She was employed
as a seamstress at
the former Arrow Shirt Factory, Lewistown; had been the owner of the former
Polly's Pizza
Shop and the former J&P Diner, both in Liverpool; and was most recently
employed at the
Newport Food Bank through the Green Thumb program. She was a member of
the Newport American
Legion Auxiliary and attended Evangelical Methodist Church, Oakland Mills.

were held Friday at the Guss Funeral Home, Mifflintown, with Rev. Franklin
Trego officiating.

Harrisburg General Hospital. He was born May 18, 1923 in Mifflin, Juniata
County, a son of
the late Daniel R. Sr. and Edna [Nipple] Coder. He is survived by his wife,
Helen [Wolfe]
Coder, whom he married February 7, 1971. Also surviving are two sons, John
Coder, Mifflin,
and Terry Coder, Danville; two brothers, James R. Coder, Mifflintown RR3,
and Robert F.
Coder, Elizabethtown; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He
was preceded in death
by one brother, Thomas "Tim" Coder, and three sisters, Rose Coder, Mary
Bergstresser and
Willa Brown. He retired from Juniata Garments, Mifflin. Graveside services
were held Saturday
at Union Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Mifflintown RR4, with Rev. William
N. Esborn officiating.

Columbia Medical Center, Kissimmee, FL, where he was vacationing. He was
born in Richfield
May 7, 1934, a son of Dorothy M. [Arnold] Davis, McAlisterville, RR1, and
the late William L.
Davis. August 1, 1953 he married the former Esther A. Lauver. In addition
to his mother and
wife, he is survived by one son, Matthew R. Davis, Thompsontown; one daughter,
Lisa A.
Beasom, Mexico, PA; two brothers, Raymond L. Davis, Middletown, and William
E. Davis,
Dillsburg; two sisters, Sandra Graybill and Nancy Feltman, both of McAlisterville;
and three
grandchildren. He was a 1952 graduate of Fayette High School, McAlisterville.
He served in
the United States Army from December 1956 to December 1958, on active duty
then in the Active
Reserves until 1962. He retired from Standard Steel, Lewistown, September
27, 1996 after 30
years as a supervisor in the Open Die Shop. He was previously employed
for 12 years with,
Precisionware, Thompsontown. He was a sports enthusiast, playing baseball
and golf, hunting,
camping and going to Penn State football games. He also repaired all kinds
of appliances for
people as a hobby. He was a member and trustee of Thompsontown United Methodist
Church,
member and past officer of Thompsontown Area Lions Club, where he was chairman
of Central
Pennsylvania Blood Bank annual blood drives, and a member of Thompsontown
Volunteer Fire
Company,and American Legion Country Club, Post 177, Newport. He was a past
Webelos leader and
Cubmaster of Cub Pack Thompsontown. In 1986 he was chosen as the recipient
of the Outstanding
Citizen Award from the Thompsontown Area Lions Club. The funeral will be
held at 10:30 a.m.
Wednesday, January 22 at Thompsontown United Methodist Church, with Revs.
Gene W. McCallips
and Arthur L. Montgomery officiating. Interment will follow in the Locust
Run Cemetery,

Troop No. 162 Boy Scouts of America. He retired in 1988 with 40 years of
service as a

FISHER, HENRY NEWTON -- Henry N. Fisher, 77, of Millerstown RR2, died
at 4:00 a.m. Thursday, December 26, 1996, at
Holy Spirit Hospital, Camp Hill, of an apparent heart attack. Born at Juniata
County,
February 4, 1919, he was the son of the late McClellan and Chestie [Shadel]
Fisher. June 27,
1942, he married the former Dora E. Troup, who survives. His death breaks
a marital union of
54 years. Mr. Fisher was educated in the Juniata County rural schools.
For over 35 years he
was employed by Pennsylvania Power & Light Co. at Harrisburg as a truck
driver for the power
line crews. He retired at age 60. He was Protestant by faith. He was a
member of the
Susquehanna Valley Sportsman's Club, Liverpool RR1, Liverpool Fire Company
and Ambulance
League and Millerstown Fire Company and Ambulance League. His leisure time
was spent in
woodworking, making lawn ornaments and porch swings, hunting and fishing.
In addition to his
wife, be is survived by two sons, Larry R. and Donald L. Fisher, both of
Millerstown RR3; one
brother, Melvin M. "Mel" Fisher, Dauphin; two sisters, Helen Strawser,
Richfield RR1, and
Joanna Knouse, Mt. Pleasant Mills RR2; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He
was preceded in death by three sisters, an infant sister at birth, Hulda
Keiser and Dorothy
Wingert; and one brother, Raymond Fisher. The funeral service was conducted
Saturday from the
George P. Garman Funeral Home, Liverpool, with Rev. Charles T. Tressler,
pastor of the
Liverpool area United Methodist churches, officiating. Interment was made
in St. James United

County. She was a
homemaker and mother, who loved to spend her leisure time gardening, hunting
and fishing. She
attended Dressler's Ridge United Methodist Church, Mt. Pleasant Mills RR2.
Her memberships
included the Liverpool Ambulance League and Fire Company and Richfield
Ambulance League.
Surviving are three daughters, twins Ruth I. Maneval, Mt. Pleasant Mills
RR2, and Gloria J.
Frymoyer, Liverpool RR1, and Catherine G. Goodling, Mt. Pleasant Mills
RR2; one brother,
William Willow, Liverpool RR1; one sister, Anna Aucker, Millerstown RR2;
12 grandchildren;

3:28 a.m. Thursday, January 16, 1997, at
Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. Born August 22, 1912, in Yeagertown,
he was a son of the
late Wallace W. and Edna Pearl [Kenawell] Fronk. His wife, Margaret B.
[Colyer] Fronk, whom
he married December 22, 1953, survives. Also surviving are: brother and
sister, Leroy Fronk
and Irma M. Fronk, both of McAlisterville. He attended Free Spring School,
Van Wert and
served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of McAlisterville
United
Methodist Church and Fayette Fire and Ambulance Co., McAlisterville. He
was an avid hunter
and fisherman. He had been employed for many years as a sheet metal worker
for Paul
Hornberger Sheet Metal, McAlisterville. He retired in July of 1994 from
Lyon Fashions,
McAlisterville, where he was a custodian/night watchman for more than 30
years. Services were
held Monday at the Ronald C. Sheaffer Funeral Home, McAlisterville, with
Rev. James R.
Sunderland officiating. Interment was in Hillside Cemetery, McAlisterville.

FULTZ, JOHN FRANKLIN -- John F. Fultz, 66, of Richfield RR1, died at
4:58 a.m. Sunday, January 12, 1997 at Sunbury
Community Hospital, where he was admitted January 3 from Penn Lutheran
village Nursing Home,
Selinsgrove. He'd been admitted to Penn Lutheran Village December 24, 1996.
Born October 2,
1930 at Union Township, Port Trevorton, he was the son of the late Ralph
B. and Mary C.
Yeakley Foltz. He was educated in the Port Trevorton schools. He entered
the U.S. Air Force
and served during the Korean Conflict. He distinguished himself by an act
of heroism at Eglin
Air Force Base, Florida, June 15, 1950, when he displayed outstanding courage
and complete
disregard for his own personal safety by entering a blazing aircraft in
order to rescue three
airmen trapped inside. For this act of courage he was awarded the Soldiers
Medal, He was
honorably discharged from his military duties November 6, 1951. Mr. Fultz
was a dock worker
initially for Eastern, Express Trucking Co., then Wilson Trucking Co.,
followed by Carolina
Freightways and Transcon Freight Company, all of the Harrisburg area. He
retired after 35
years of employment, in 1987. He was Protestant by faith. He was a member
of Local 776,
Teamsters, Harrisburg, the American Association of Retired Persons, American
Legion Post No.
0945, Wormleysburg, Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 5640, Middleburg, and
Richfield Arnbulance
League and Fire Company. His leisure time was spent duck hunting along
the Susquehanna River
and he also took great pleasure in gardening and blueberry growing. He
is survived by two
children, Catherine A. "Cathy" Kahley, Lewistown RR3, and Crystal A. Portzline,
Mt. Pleasant
Mills RR2; two brothers, Hoyt Foltz, Sunbury, and Elwood "Whitey" Foltz,
Mt. Pleasant Mills;
two sisters, Anna Reichenbach, Port Trevorton RRI, and Helen Shambach,
Penns Creek; five
grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Mr. Fultz was preceded in death
by one brother,
William "Big Bill" Foltz, in 1972, and one sister, Betty Kerstetter. The
funeral service will
be conducted Wednesday, January 15 at 2:00 p.m. from the George P. Garman
Funeral Home, Mt.
Pleasant Mills, with Pastor Enos M. Shelley officiating. Interment will
be made in the
Richfield Union Cemetery, Richfield. Military honors will be accorded by
members of the
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 5640, Middleburg.

FULTZ, WILLIAM F. ----- William F. "Bill" Fultz, 73, of Mifflin, died
at 8:55 p.m. Tuesday, January 14, 1997, in the
emergency room of Lewistown Hospital. He was born June 4, 1923 in Fermanagh
Township, Juniata
County, a son of the late Elmer L. and Margaret [Horning] Fultz. He is
survived by his wife,
Betty R. [Snyder] Fultz, whom he married April 9, 1954. In addition to
his wife, he is
survived by one daughter, Mrs. Tracy L. [Mary Ann] Waite, McAlisterville
RR1; four
grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was the last of his immediate
family, having
been preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Fultz and Elmer Fultz, and
two sisters, Helen
Colabine and Ivy Fultz. He was a WWII U.S. Army veteran, serving as a private
in the European
Theater before being captured and becoming a prisoner of war. He retired
in 1986 from Empire
Kosher Poultry, Inc., Mifflintown, and had worked at Renninger's Sewing
Factory, Mifflintown.
Services were held Friday at Brown Funeral Home, Mifflintown, with Rev.
Jack D. Twombly
officiating. Burial was in Union Memorial Gardens, Mifflintown RR4. Military
burial honors
were conducted by the Juniata County Veterans Council. Memorial contributions

died at 2:15 a.m., Thursday, January 9, 1997, at
her residence. She was seriously ill for the past three weeks. Born in
Snyder County May 20,
1918, she was the daughter of the late Ammon and Carrie Herrold Reinard.
February 20, 1944
she married William Mark Graybill, who preceded her in death November 15,
1979. She was
educated at the Upper Herr old Schoolhouse, Port Trevorton RR1. She was
a homemaker and
mother. Mrs. Graybill was a member of Cross Roads Mennonite Church, Richfield
RR1. She was
also a member of Richfield Ambulance League and was known as an accomplished
quilter.
Surviving are a daughter, Josephine Louise Graybill, at home. Thirty-five
nieces and nephews
also survive. Mrs. Graybill was preceded in death by four brothers, John,
Daniel, Wilson and
Samuel Reinard; and four sisters, Josephine I. Reinard, M. Alfaretta Longacre,
Elizabeth Herr
and Annabelle Hinkle. The funeral service was Sunday, January 12 at Cross
Roads Mennonite
Church, with Revs. Orval C. Graybill and Timothy E. Lauver officiating.
Interment was in
Lauver's Mennonite Cemetery, HC 63, Richfield. The George P. Garman Funeral
Home, Mt.

Center, Jeannette. He was born March 15, 1929 in South Uniontown, a son

and Anna Shrader Grimm. Prior to his retirement he had been employed as
an agent with the
Prudential Insurance Company of Greensburg. In addition to his parents,
he was predeceased by
a brother, Herbert Grimm Jr., and three sisters, Edna Davis, Dorothy Anderson
and Connie
Waldroupe. He is survived by his wife, Sylva Cramer Grimm; two sons, Glenn
R. Grimm of
McAlisterville and James J. Grimm of Greensburg; two daughters, Mrs. Stanley
[Karen]
Stynchula and Mrs. Cecil [Linda] Ashcraft, both of Latrobe; nine grandchildren;
and a
brother, Wallace R. Grimm of Monaca. Barnhart Funeral Home, Greensburg,

younger sisters. She was employed as a seamstress for L. Shellenberger
& Sons at both the
McAlisterville and East Salem factories, for 35 years. She liked
crocheting and embroidery.
She was a lifelong member of Brown's United Methodist Church, McAlisterville
RR1. She is
survived by one sister, Emma A. Lauver, Richfield. She was predeceased
by two sisters, Edith
Hepner and Edna Rauch. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday,

HIMES, DONALD --------- Donald Himes, 68, of Mifflintown RR2 [East Salem],
died at 5:10 p.m. Wednesday, February 5,
1997 at Holy Spirit Hospital, Camp Hill, following a short illness. He
was born in Saxton,
PA, March 3, 1928, a son of the late Thomas and Jessie [Foor] Himes. His
wife, the former
Dorothy A. Packard, whom he married October 4, 1991, survives. Also surviving
are two sons,
Jay D. Himes, Harrisburg, and Jeffrey D. Himes, Shippensburg, a stepson,
Donald Gingrich,
Harrisburg; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother
and sister, Thomas
Himes and Madeline Wise. He was a 1945 graduate of Saxton-Liberty High
School, Saxton. He
retired in July 1984 from the Harrisburg State Hospital after 35 years
as a nursing
supervisor. He served in the United States Army from September 1950 to
September 1952; the
Army Reserves from 1952 to 1955; and in the Pennsylvania Army National
Guard from 1955 to
1984, retiring as a master sergeant. He had been assigned to the Harrisburg
and Hershey
armories. He was a member and coach of the All National Guard Rifle Team
from 1968 to 1984.
He was a member of the Pennsylvania National Guard Team that won four consecutive
First U.S.
Army Commander's Match Championships. He was awarded the Tennessee National
Guard Certificate
of Merit; USA Meritorious Service Medal; Army Commendation Medal for Meritorious
Service; and
the National Guard Meritorious Service Award. He was a member of East Salem
United Methodist
Church, the Promise Keepers group, Thompsontown Area Lions Club and the
National Rifle
Association, for which be volunteered his expertise on the firing line
of the annual NRA
Championships. The funeral was held Saturday at East Salem United Methodist
Church, with Rev.
Terry A. Sheldon officiating. Private interment followed in Juniata Memorial
Park, Lewistown

emergency room of Lewistown Hospital. She was born June 27, 1919 in Greenwood
Township,
Juniata County, a daughter of the late William E. and Amie E. [May] Bassler.
She was married
to Raymond W. Jacobs, who died February 18, 1981. She is survived by a
son, Raymond C.
Jacobs, Port Royal; three brothers, Russel Bassler and Kenneth Bassler,
both of East Salem
and Ronald Bassler, Central City; one sister, Julia Hepner, McAlisterville
RR1; three
grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by an infant
daughter; a
brother, Walter Bassler; and two sisters, Anna Mary Lauver and Maxine Pennebaker.
She was
employed for more than 35 years as a seamstress for Rae-Sel Corp., Port
Royal, until it
closed in 1980. She then managed and baked in her son's bakery, The Fairview
Bake Shop, Port
Royal. She was a member of Port Royal United Methodist Church, where she
was active in her
Sunday school class. She was also a member of Ladies International Garment
Workers Union,
Local 108, Harrisburg, and a past member of the Ladies' Auxiliary of Friendship
Fire Company,
Port Royal. She did volunteer fundraising for many charities, was a lover
of country music
and collected cook books. The funeral service was held Saturday at the
Ronald C. Sheaffer
Funeral Home, McAlisterville, with Rev. Frank J. Swartz officiating. Interment
followed in
the New Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal RR1. Memorial donations may be

Tuesday, March 4, 1997, at Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City, NC. Born
August 13, 1935 in
Clinton County, he was a son of Mary Elizabeth [Gledhill] Kauffman of Mifflintown
and the
late Martin Luther Kauffman. His wife, Jeanette [Crenson] Kauffman, survives.
Also surviving
are: a brother, John Kauffman, Sebring, FL. He was a retired veterans benefits
counselor with
Wilkes-Barre Veterans Hospital and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. A memorial
service will be
held at a later date in Pennsylvania. Twiford's Memorial Chapel, Elizabeth
City, NC, is in
charge of arrangements.

survived by his wife, Mildred B. Titzell Kerlin, whom he married January
21, 1939. Also

Burd of Port Royal, Craig C. Kerlin of Port Royal RR1 and Harold "Pete"

grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was a farmer for many years
and retired as a
self-employed carpenter. He was a member of Matamoras United Methodist
Church and the Juniata
Saddle Association. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Guss Funeral
Home, Mifflintown,
with Rev. Frank Swartz officiating. Interment was in Old Church Hill Cemetery,
Port Royal.

brother, Rickie L. Wolfkiel, Lewistown; a half-brother, Robert L. Crawford,
Mifflintown;
maternal grandmother, Mrs. Erma R. Hockenberry, Brookline Manor Convalescent
Home,
Mifflintown. She was preceded in death by her stepfather, Walter G. Crawford,
April 14, 1993.
She was an administrative assistant for the High-Scope Educational Research
Foundation,
Ypsilanti, MI. She was a 1967 graduate of Chief Logan High School and a
graduate of the Bob
Jones University, Greenville, SC. She was a member of the Forest Avenue
Baptist Church,
Ypsilanti, MI, where she was the leader of the Pioneer Club, Patch The
Pirate Club and the
Sunshine Girls of the church. Services were held March 24 at the Stark
Funeral Home,
Ypsilanti, MI. Graveside services were held Tuesday, March 25 at St. Paul's

Center, State College, and formerly of Coleman
Hotel, Lewistown, died at 1:55 a.m. Sunday, January 26, 1997 at the nursing
center. He was
born June 18, 1911 in Mapleton Depot, Huntingdon County, a son of the late
Nelson G. and Mary
Ella [Miller] Knepp. He is survived by one sister, Rena Weller, McVeytown,
and many nieces
and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Andrew Knepp,
Earl Knepp and Leslie
Knepp, and one sister, Esther L. Knepp. He was a World War II U.S. Army
veteran, serving as a
corporal with the 2250th Quarter Master Truck CO. in the European Theater.
He retired in 1974
from Republic Steel Corp., Canton, OH, and in earlier life was employed
on the roof crew of
American Viscose Corp., Lewistown. Memorial services will be held at 2:00
p.m. Wednesday,
January 29, at Brown Funeral Home, 100 Bridge Street, Mifflintown, with
Rev. Jonathan C.

KRATZER, SR., EARL ROBERT - Earl R. Kratzer Sr., 71, of Richfield RR1,
died Thursday morning, January 9, 1997, at
Sunbury Community Hospital, after he was transported there by ambulance
following a
massive coronary at his residence shortly before. Born January 31, 1925
in Richfield, he
was the son of Edna Lauver Kratzer, Star Route, Richfield, and the late
Charles Michael
Kratzer. February 5, 1944 he married the former Betty Lou Teats, who survives.
Mr.
Kratzer graduated from Freeburg High School, Freeburg, in 1941. He served
in the U.S.
Navy during World War II as an Aviation Metalsmith Third Class from his
entry, June 18,
1943 to his honorable discharge, April 13, 1946. He was a self-employed
truck driver for
many years and had also worked for other companies until the present as
a produce carrier
in the trucking business. His memberships include Richfield Mennonite Church,
where he
was a Sunday school teacher for the men's class, served as a church bus
driver for the
church's children's ministry [AWANA] and also provided general transportation
for others
when and where needed in getting to church and its functions. He was a
member of the camp
board for the past seven years, during the summer months, involved with
its ministry,
Camp Montawagan, Saxton. At the age of 60, he completed a home Bible study
course from
Liberty University, Roanoke, VA. He was a member of the American Association
of Retired
Persons and was a member of the "Million Mile Hall of Fame," a club for
truck drivers who
have been accident-free in driving one million miles. His leisure time
was well spent in
traveling to Canada and fishing there in its waterways. In addition to
his mother and
wife, he is survived by two sons, Earl R. Kratzer Jr. of Newport and Michael
M. Kratzer
of Sunbury; two daughters, Georgianne Stroup, Richfield RR1 and Melissa
L. Durborow of
East Berlin. Also surviving are four brothers, Ernest Kratzer, Millerstown
RR1, Harold
K. Kratzer, Richfield RR1, Norman Kratzer, Richfield and Elwood L. "Skip"
Kratzer,
Richfield; a sister, Geraldine Goodling, Mifflintown; and six grandchildren.
He was
preceded in death by two daughters, Linda Kratzer, in infancy, and Gail
Bollinger in June
1983; and a brother, Clarence Kratzer. The funeral service was Sunday,
January 12, from
Richfield Mennonite Church, with Pastor Jerry R. O'Connell officiating.
Interment was in

KRATZER, EVELYN B. ---- Evelyn B. Kratzer, 82, of Church Street Towers,
Lancaster, died Friday, March 7, 1997 at
Conestoga View Nursing Home, Lancaster. She was born April 18, 1914 in
Snyder County, a
daughter of the late Newton P. Kratzer and Margaret Mitterling. Mrs. Kratzer
attended Stahl's
Schoolhouse and Richfield Grammar School. She worked for 16 years as a
clerk at Watt & Shand,
a department store. She also did domestic housework at various places.
She was a 65-year
member of Richfield United Church of Christ. She was a volunteer for the
Red Cross at
Lancaster General Hospital for 24 years. She was also a volunteer at the
Church of the
Apostles. Surviving are one brother, Raymond Kratzer of McAlisterville,
and 27 nieces and
nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Harry and Charles,
and three sisters,
Marguerite Moyer, Lillian Kratzer and Beulah Zeiders. The funeral was conducted
Tuesday at
the George P. Garman Funeral Home, Inc., Mt. Pleasant Mills, by Rev. Tom
Adams. Burial was in
the Richfield Union Cemetery.

died at 12:46 a.m. Wednesday, February 26, 1997 at the Brethren Home, New
Oxford, where she
had resided since 1985. Born February 15, 1905 at Juniata County, near
Oakland Mills, she was
the daughter of the late Henry S. and Elizabeth "Nettie" [Auker] Hart.
October 17, 1925 she
married Christy M. Lauver, who preceded her in death November 12, 1985.
The couple had
celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary just prior to Mr. Lauver's demise.
Mrs. Lauver was
schooled in Perry County at the Pfoutz Valley Schoolhouse, and in Juniata
County at the
Swartz's and Stony Run schools. She was a homemaker and mother. She was
a member of
Bunkertown Church of the Brethren prior to her marriage and following marriage
she and her
late husband were members of Richfield Mennonite Church, where she was
an active member of
the Women's Missionary Society, the older ladies' Sunday school class and
the sewing circle.
She enjoyed sewing, quilting, knitting afghans and cooking. Surviving are
two sons, Raymond
C. Lauver, Chapel Hill, NC, and Orville G. Lauver, York; one daughter,
Orpha H. Leister,
Lewistown; one brother, Roy E. Hart, Lewisburg; two sisters, Susan E. Arbogast,
McAlisterville, and Evelyn H. Graybill of the Brethren Home, New Oxford;
ten grandchildren;
18 greatgrandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces,
nephews and
great-nieces and greatnephews. Mrs. Lauver was preceded in death by two
brothers, Jay Wilmer
Hart and Harold S. Hart; one sister, LaRue Hart; and one great-grandson,
Dean Lauver. The

Factory, as a seamstress, at Shamokin Dam, and also did seasonal work for
Furman's Cannery,
Northumberland RR2. She was primarily a homemaker and mother. She was a
Member of Zion
[Halls] Lutheran Church, Port Trevorton RR1, Reliance Hose Co. Ambulance
League, Middleburg,
and Medic 55, Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg. She was known
for her cooking skill
and loved to spend quality time with her two granddaughters. In addition
to her husband, she
is survived by one son, Roger A. Lauver, Selinsgrove RR3; two daughters,
Crystal A. Glass,
Middleburg RR4, and Kathy D. Lauver, at home; two granddaughters, Elizabeth
J. and Rebecca F.

Lodge No. 925,
Millerstown. He was a life member of Mifflintown Hose Co. No. 1 and a member
of the Juniata
County Trout Club. He had been elected to serve two consecutive terms as
a councilman for
Mifflintown Borough Council. He was a WWII U.S. Navy veteran. In earlier
life he was a self-
employed milk hauler, hauling milk to, the former Mifflin Creamery. He
retired in 1988 as
head of the Maintenance Department for Mifflintown Borough. Funeral services
were held Friday
at Brown Funeral Home, Mifflintown, with Rev. Douglas H. Kelley officiating.
Burial was in
Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown, where full military burial
honors were

Convalescent Home, Mifflintown RR1; three sisters, Pauline Lauver, Selinsgrove,

Mifflintown, and Ethel Mae Fogleman, Camp Hill; three grandchildren; and
three great-
grandchildren. He attended North East Grade School in Delaware Township.
He was a farmer for
most of his life, owning and operating Clearspring Hatchery from 1938 until
1958. He also
sold chicks for Maple Lawn Farms from 1958 until 1968. He retired in 1978
from Susquehanna
University, where he worked as assistant food service supervisor. He entered
the U.S. Army in
February 1945 and served until May 1946 with the 1st Division Service Co.,
16th Infantry in
the European Theater of Operations [Germany]. He was a member of McAlisterville
United
Methodist Church, Lost Creek Health Services, McAlisterville, McAlisterville
Fire Company and
American Legion Post No. 298, Mifflintown. He was also a former Sunday
school superintendent
at Neimonds Church. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. The funeral service
was held Friday
at the Ronald C. Sheaffer Funeral Home, McAlisterville, with Rev. James
R. Sunderland Jr.
officiating. Interment followed in the Hillside Cemetery, McAlisterville.

December 30, 1996, of natural causes while cutting wood on a woodlot near
his home. He was
born in Millerstown November 5, 1919, the son of the late William N. and
Lillian [Fahnestock]
Long. He attended Wardville School and was a farmer until he enlisted in
the U.S. Army
February 6, 1940. He served until August 1945 in Central Europe, Normandy,
Northern France
and Rhineland, earning the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal
with four bronze
stars. December 27, 1946 he married the former Ruth Irene Travitz, who
died October 14, 1981.
He is survived by two grandchildren with whom he lived, Pamela J. Seaman
and Mark J. Seaman;
a sister Dorothy Chubb of Altoona. He was predeceased by his daughter,
Ruth Maxine Seaman
March 2, 1990. He was a member of Millerstown United Methodist Church.
He retired in 1980
from his employment as Greenwood Township Maintenance Foreman. He previously
was employed as
a mechanic at Capital City Transit, Harrisburg and L.B. Smith Construction,
Camp Hill. A
memorial service was held Sunday, January 5 at his church, with Rev. Art
Montgomery
officiating. Interment of cremains followed in Riverside Cemetery, Millerstown.

23, 1997 at Lewistown Hospital. He was born April 10, 1917 in Thompsontown,
the son of the
late Frank and Pearl [Myers] Lukens. He married Jeanette A. Frymoyer November
30, 1939. He
retired in 1981 from Rae-Sel, Inc., Port Royal, where he worked, in the
cutting room, and was
previously employed by Delaware Township as roadmaster, S&S Chevrolet,
Thompsontown, as a
mechanic, and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation as a truck
driver. He also owned
and operated his own farm from 1949 until 1970 and the East Salem Garage
during the mid
1940s. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Norman Lee
Lukens and Harold W.
Lukens, both of Thompsontown RR1; a sister, Laura Schlegel, of Locust Grove
Retirement
Village, Mifflin; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He
was preceded in death
by a brother, Myers Lukens, and two sisters, Emily Kauffman and Marie Brubaker.
He was a
member of East Salem United Methodist Church, East Salem Rod and Gun Club,
Troxelville, the
National Rifle Association and a past member of the Pennsylvania Farmers
Association. He was
an avid turkey hunter. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, February
26 at 10:30 a.m.

LYTER, WILLIAM LUTHER - William L. Lyter, 81, formerly of Harrisburg,
died early Friday morning December 20, 1996 at
Brookline Manor, Mifflintown RR1, where he had resided for the past four
years. Born in
Juniata County at Port Royal, he was the son of the late George C. and
Lottie [Erlenmeyer]
Lyter. He was later adopted by his now stepmother, Margaret [Frankhouse]
Lyter, who resides
at Brookline Retirement Village, Mifflintown RR1. Mr. Lyter graduated in
1933 from
Montoursville High School. He furthered his education at Penn State College,
State College,
graduating in 1937. For many years, Mr. Lyter was employed by the Commonwealth
of
Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, as a supervisor. His retirement followed many
years of employment
with the state. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Harrisburg, and
a contributing
member of American Legion Post No. 27, Harrisburg, for 58 years. He served
with the U.S. Army
during WWII. In addition to his stepmother, he is survived by one stepbrother,
Richard A.
Beaver, Winter Haven, FL, and one stepsister, Eleanor Hertzler, Port Royal.
Mr. Lyter was
preceded in death by a sister, Lillian Lyter. A memorial service was conducted
Sunday at the
George P. Garman Funeral Home, Liverpool, with Rev. Ray Hatcher officiating.

Pennsylvania Railroad in Enola for 33 years. He was a member of Faith Lutheran
Church,
Richfield RR1, and was a former member of the church council. He was a
trustee of St. Peter's
Cemetery, Millerstown RR2. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Farmers
Association and the
Perry County Farm Bureau. He was a life member of the Harrisburg Region
Central Labor Council
Community Blood Bank and was a member of the Fayette Ambulance League.
He is survived by
three sons and one daughter, Robert E. Mather of Winfield RR1, Brian L.

FL, Donald A. Mather of Millerstown RR2 and Mary L. Hockenbroch of Liverpool
RR1; 13
grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and two brothers and one sister,

1967. While in Sunbury she provided child care for many children in the
area. She was a
member of St. Joseph Church, Aston. While living in Sunbury she attended
the former St.
Michael's Church. She is survived by one son and one daughter, John R.
McCahan of Annapolis,
MD, and Patricia M. Cook of Aston; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren;
and one
sister, Laurenza Auger of Hull, Quebec. A Mass of Christian Burial will
be celebrated
Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Monica Church, Sunbury, with Rev. William

in her early life.
She and her husband owned and operated the J.H. Miller General Merchandise
Store, Bunkertown,
from 1938 to 1966. She was the postmaster for Bunkertown Post Office, which
was, located in
the store, from 1944 to 1953. She had also been employed at both the McAlisterville
and East
Salem garment factors. She was a lifelong member of Bunkertown Church of
the Brethren, where
she was a pianist and custodian of the Sunday school, records. Her hobbies
were cooking,
baking and writing poetry and historical facts. She cared for her ailing
husband during the
last years of his life. The funeral was held Tuesday at Bunkertown Church
of the Brethren,
McAlisterville RR1, with Rev. Elwood O. Johnson officiating. Interment
was in Goodwill

Fraternal Organization, Rocky Acres Hunting Lodge, past leader of the Mifflintown
Explorers
Scout Troop and served one term as mayor of Mifflintown. He was a U.S.
Coast Guard veteran
of WWII. He retired on disability in 1985, from Avtex Fibers, Lewistown,
where he had been
employed as an electrician. Funeral services were held Thursday at Brown

1907. She was married February 25, 1928 to Harry R. Nace, who died in August
1973. She
attended East Salem Elementary School. She attended Brown's United, Methodist
Church, where
she was a Sunday school teacher and active in the church's women's and
the prayer groups. She
was a homemaker all of her life and was an avid gardener. She is survived
by four daughters,
Carol Sipe, Burnham, Erma Diffenderfer, McAlisterville RR2, Anne Cieslar,
McAlisterville RR2,
and Clara Fogleman, McAlisterville; a son, Harry H. Nace, McAlisterville
RR1; a brother, Max
Haubert, McAlisterville; two, sisters, Louise Haubert and Mary Frymoyer,
both of East Salem;
11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death
by a brother, Kebbler
Haubert , and two sisters, Pauline Sweigert and Maude Mengel. The funeral
service was held
Monday at Brown's United Methodist Church, McAlisterville RR2, with Revs.
Ronald E. Landis
and C. Richard Beach officiating. Interment followed in the Hillside Cemetery,
McAlisterville

1903 in McVeytown, a
daughter of the late Thomas and Ellen Cutman Beatty. Her foster parents
were the late William
and Annie Adams Longacre. Her husband, Carl C. Oberlin, died June 20, 1969.
She is survived
by two sons, Alfred Oberlin of Mifflintown and Ray F. Oberlin of Thompsontown;
three
daughters, Anna Mary Clouser of Harrisburg, Pearl Swartz of Mifflintown
and Barbara King of
Mifflintown RR4; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-
grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Emma F. Speece
and Frances
Oberlin; three grandchildren; one brother; and one sister. She had been
employed as a
seamstress, retiring from Thompsontown Garment Factory. She was the oldest
member of Cedar
Grove Brethren in Christ Church and was a member of the Ladies Garment
Union. Funeral
services were held Sunday at Cedar Grove Brethren in Christ Church, Mifflintown
RR4, with
Pastor Ken Letner, Pastor Eugene Heidler and Pastor Wilbur Benner officiating.
Interment was
in Locust Run Cemetery, Locust Run. Guss Funeral Home, Mifflintown, was
in charge of

J. and Ruth Glenn
Pennell, he was born in Philadelphia and lived in Bryn Mawr. The family
moved to Mifflintown
in 1936 and he graduated from Juniata Joint High School in 1939. He was
a graduate of
Gettysburg College and a World War II Navy war veteran. Mr. Pennell was
a retired customer
service representative for Owens Coming Co. He was a member of Our Saviour
Lutheran Church,
Stone Harbor; the church council; Stephen C. Ludlam Post No. 331 of the
American Legion; the
Retired Officers Club; an elder and trustee of Trinity United Presbyterian
Church of Cherry
Hill; Stone Harbor Seniors; Stone Harbor Yacht Club; Stone Harbor Republican
Club; the
Wetlands Institute; and AARP. Surviving are his wife, Doris F.; two daughters,
Ann P.
Moffett of Wilmington, DE, and Mary P. Licata of Cape May Court House;
a brother, Richard G.
of York; a sister, Mary P. Simmons of Hershey; and five grandchildren.

Wednesday at Our Saviour Lutheran Church. Burial as in Cape May County

He retired on
disability after being employed as an electrician for 28 years with Pennsylvania,
Penn
Central and Conrail Railroads in Enola. He had previously been employed
as a heavy equipment
operator for Hoosier Construction of Ohio and he had been an owner/operator
truck driver and
had cut and hauled pulpwood logs to Glaffelters, Spring Grove. He was an
avid hunter and
fisherman. The funeral service was Saturday, January 4 at the Ronald C.

He was a son of
Ethel E. Powell Reisinger of Shippensburg and the late James R. Reisinger.
He was a member of
Shippensburg Church of the Nazarene. He was one of the original founders
of the Sound
Investment Band, formerly known as the Multi-Tones. He played with the
bands for 30 years. He
was a member of the American Federation of Musicians, Local No. 770. He
was a United States
Navy veteran of the Korean War, serving on the USS New jersey. He worked
for Audia Temp.
Services, working for Ingersoll-Rand Co., Shippensburg. Prior to that he
was employed by
Wilson College, Charnbersburg. Many years ago he delivered for Valley Baking
Company,
Shippensburg. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Barbara
A. Bietsch
Reisinger; two sons, Michael D. Reisinger and Edward E. Reisinger, both
of Shippensburg; two
daughters, Mrs. Alan B. [Teresa L.] Krum and Mrs. Christopher A. [Lori

at 7:00 p.m. Sunday, March 2, 1997 at his
residence. He was born in Mifflintown July 7, 1920, a son of the late Homer
Clayton and Olive
Vernice [Smith] Rusho. He is survived by his wife, Mary A. [Myers] Rusho,
whom he married
April 6, 1947. Also surviving area son, Ronald E. Rusho, Cocolamus; a brother,
Homer Abe
Rusho, Camp Hill; a sister, Leatrice Benner, Dauphin; and two grandchildren.
He was
predeceased by a sister, Irene Dressler. He attended McAlisterville schools,
then worked on
his father's fruit farm prior to entering the U.S. Army in November 1942,
where he served as
a military policeman in Sicily and Rhineland before his discharge in January
1946 with an
American Campaign Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal
with two Bronze Stars
and the WWII Victory Medal. He was employed as a custodian at Harrisburg
State Hospital from
1948 until his retirement in 1984. He was a member of St. John's United
Methodist Church,
McAlisterville RR2, where he was a member of the Men's Bible Class; Veterans
of Foreign Wars,
Mifflintown; Juniata Fire Police; and Fayette Ambulance Company, McAlisterville.
He had an
extensive stamp collection and enjoyed making and painting wooden lawn
ornaments. The funeral
service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Ronald C. Sheaffer Funeral

Westfall Street, McAlisterville, with Rev. Ronald E. Landis officiating.
Interment will

died Wednesday, February 5, 1997 at Lewistown Hospital. He was born January
9, 1906 in Centre
Hall, a son of the late J. Roy and Sarah Keen Schaeffer. He was preceded
in death by his
wife, the former Alma Lutz, in 1972. He graduated from Centre Hall-Potter
Township High
School in 1927. Mr. Schaeffer worked in the poultry industry for many years,
determining the
sex of chickens. He also owned and operated a hatchery and a poultry and
fruit farm in New
York for many years. He later farmed near Centre Hall. He was a member
of Trinity United
Church of Christ, Centre Hall, and was a former member of Valois Grange
in New York. He was
also an avid fisherman and enjoyed gardening and spent his winters in Florida
for many years.
He is survived by a daughter, Beryl Green Smith of Dauphin; two grandchildren;
and seven
great-grandchildred. The funeral service was held Saturday at the Mark
D. Heintzelman Funeral
Home, Centre Hall, with Rev. Barbara J. Rhodes officiating. Burial was
in the Reformed and

Medical Center. She was born August 18, 1955 at Lewistown, a daughter of

E. Sourbeck Schlegel of Mifflintown RR3. Also surviving are her companion,
Albert Robert
Thawley of Richfield; one son, Richard C. Huff Jr. of Mifflintown RR3;
one daughter, Tina R.
Huff of Mifflintown RR3; three brothers, Harold Eugene, Schlegel of Chesapeake,
VA, Roy Allen
Schlegel of Mifflin and Floyd William Schlegel of Mifflintown; and one
sister, Ellen Diane
Schlegel of Mifflin. She had been employed as a seamstress at Scotties
Fashions, Lewistown,
and was most recently employed as a cashier at Boscov's, Selinsgrove. She
was a 1974 graduate
of Juniata High School, Mifflintown. She loved the ocean, dolphins and
her porcelain doll
collection. She enjoyed working with crafts and gardening. She loved life.
A memorial service
was held Saturday at Guss Funeral Home, Mifflintown, with Rev. George Reynolds
officiating.

SEBASTIAN, RUTH MAE --- Ruth Mae Sebastian, 68, formerly of Harrisburg,
died at 4:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 14, 1997,
at Brookline Manor Convalescent Home, Mifflintown RR1, where she had been
a resident since
October 1996. She was born in Fayette Township, Juniata County, July 13,
1928, a daughter of
the late Melvin W. and Ethel Mae [Benner] Sankey. Her husband, Ralph F.
Sebastian, whom she
married September 29, 1962, survives. Also surviving are a son, Richard
F. Sebastian,
Carlisle; two brothers, Paul M. Sankey and Robert B. Sankey, both of McAlisterville;
and two
grandchildren. She was a 1946 graduate of Fayette High School, McAlisterville.
She retired in
1993 from Harrisburg Surgical Supply. Harrisburg, where she had been employed
as an accounts
receivable clerk for 25 years. She had previously been employed by Harris
Co., Office Supply,
Harrisburg; Hoffman Ford, Highspire; and in the Property and Supply, Department
of the State
Capitol. She was a Methodist by faith. She was an avid bingo player. The
funeral service was
held Friday at the Ronald C. Sheaffer Funeral Home, McAlisterville, with
Rev. James R.
Sunderland Jr. officiating. Interment followed in the Goodwill Cemetery,
McAlisterville RR1.

SHADEL, PEARL ELIZABETH - Pearl Elizabeth Shadel, 82, of Thompsontown
RR1, died at 9:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 25,
1996 at Polyclinic Medical Center, Harrisburg, where she had been hospitalized
for the past
three weeks. Born December 12, 1914 at Juniata County, she was the daughter
of the late
Norman D. and Nora [Ferry] Clotfelter. March 28,1937 she married Ralph
Harrison Shadel, who
preceded her in death September 3, 1982. Mrs. Shadel graduated in 1932
from the former
Thompsontown High School. During her marriage she was employed as a seamstress
for dress
and shirt factories in McAlisterville and Thompsontown, although she was
primarily a
homemaker and mother. She was an active member of Turkey Valley United
Methodist Church,
Millerstown RR2, where she was part of the Body Builders Program and the
women's
organization. She was also a member of Fayette Ambulance League and McAlisterville
Senior
Citizens. She is survived by two sons, Wayne R. Shadel, Thompsontown RR1,
and Stanley E.
Shadel, Mifflintown RR1; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded
in death by one sister, Ellen Anderson. The funeral service was conducted
Saturday from the
George P. Garman Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant Mills, with her pastor, Rev.
Salvatore E.
Buonocore, officiating, Interment was made in the Richfield Union Cemetery,
Richfield.

RR2 [Susquehanna Township], died at 9:26 p.m.
Tuesday, February 18, 1997 at Lewistown Hospital, where he had been hospitalized
for nearly
eight weeks. Born December 27, 1913 at Susquehanna Township, he was the
son Of the late E.
Clay and Alice Lydia [Frymoyer] Sheaffer. June 30, 1934, he married the
former A. Jean
Crissman, who survives. Mr. Sheaffer was educated at Oriental Elementary
School. He was a
grain and livestock farmer all his life and worked at the U.S. Naval Depot,
Mechanicsburg,
for several years during WWII. He was a life-long member of St. Paul's
[Leininger's] Lutheran
Church, Mt. Pleasant Mills RR2, where he served as church council member
and superintendent
of the Sunday school. He also served as caretaker of the church and its
cemetery for many
years. He was a member of the Juniata County and Pennsylvania Farmers Associations
and was a
former member of the American Farm Bureau, Greenwood Grange and the Pennsylvania
and American
Angus Associations. He had served for over ten years as tax collector for
Susquehanna
Township. Mr. Sheaffer spent his leisure time with his dog, Snoopie, and
enjoyed raising
Angus cattle, which he did for 48 years. In addition to his wife, he is
survived by one soil,
William C. Sheaffer, Beavertown; three daughters, Lorraine S. Troutman,
Millerstown RR3,
Dorothy Ackard, State College, and Janet Gingrich, Port Royal; 15 grandchildren;
and 24
great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers, twins,
Glenn and Earl, Herman
Sheaffer and Lee Sheaffer; and by three sisters, Carrie Sheaffer Llillian
Barner and Mildred
Snyder. The funeral service was held Saturday at St. Paul's [Leininger's]
Lutheran Church,
with Rev. Celo V . Leitzel officiating. Interment was made in the
adjoining church cemetery

SHELLENBERGER, MERLIN - Merlin Shellenberger, 97, of Enola, PA, died
at 9:40 a.m. Thursday, January 16, 1997, at his
residence. Born in Juniata County May 10, 1909, he was the son of the late
Edward and Agnes
[Page] Shellenberger. June 6, 1936, he was married to the former Florence
D. Fry, who
survives. The couple were married over 60 years. Mr. Shellenberger was
educated in the Snyder
County rural schools. He was employed for 29 years for the former Pennsylvania
Railroad, now
ConRail, at the Enola yards. He was a brakeman and conductor, retiring
in 1971 at age 62. His
memberships included Enola Emmanuel United Methodist Church and West Enola
Ambulance
Association. During his leisure time, he enjoyed hunting in the Richfield
area. He was a
former member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Brakemen. Surviving, in addition
to his wife,
are one daughter, Nancy L. Baker, Duncannon; four grandchildren; and three
great-
grandchildren. Mr. Shellenberger was preceded in death by two sons, Donald
E. Shellenberger,
in 1954, and Bruce E. Shellenberger, in 1953; five brothers, Lee, Reno,
Ellis, Nevin and
Russell Shellenberger; and four sisters, Edith Dreese, Stella Shellenberger,
Marie Pressley
and Sarah Elsessor. Funeral services were private. Interment was made in

sister, Geneva Watts. She last worked in February of 1982 cleaning houses
in the Reading

p.m. Wednesday, March 5, 1997, at Polyclinic
Medical Center, Harrisburg. Born November 18, 1912 in Walker Township,
Juniata County, he was
a son of the late Mervin and Della [Mertz] Smith. His wife, Jane B. Smith,
died April 2,
1981. He is survived by a number of nieces and nephews. He was the last
of his immediate
family, having been preceded in death by a brother, Dwinton Smith and two
sisters, Sarah
Emily Kipp Brubaker and Gertrude Kepner. He was owner and publisher of
The Times, Port Royal,
from 1959-1971. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S.
Army. He was
wounded in the Normandy Invasion and was awarded a Purple Heart. He was
a member of Port
Royal Presbyterian Church and Friendship Fire Co., Port Royal, where he
was chairman of the
building committee when the Port Royal Community Building was built. He
was also a member of
American Legion Post No. 298 and VFW Post No. 5863, both of Mifflintown,
AMVETS Post No. 122,
Thompsontown, and was a founding director of Lost Creek Golf Club, Oakland
Mills. Services
were held Saturday at Rex Funeral Home, Port Royal, with Rev. Richard E.
Wright officiating.
Interment was in New Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal, where military graveside
services were

June 2, 1983. She is survived by, five sons, Joseph Sorace, Southampton,
PA, Frank Sorace,
Ivyland, PA, Aurelio "Al" Sorace, Mifflintown, Dominic Sorace, Sarver,
PA, and Roland Sorace,
Huntingdon Valley, PA; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. After
coming to the
United States, she resided in Huntingdon Valley from 1934 to 1973, when
in Clearwater, FL,
from 1973 to 1992. She was of the Catholic faith. The viewing and funeral
service will be
private and at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in Sylvan
Abbey Memorial

1938 at Snyder County, he was the son of the late Arol L. and Dorothy [Rothrock]
Spade.
December 12, 1959, he married the former Vivian J. Specht, who survives.
Mr. Spade graduated
from Middleburg High School in 1956. He served during the Cuban crisis
and Vietnam era, with
the U.S. Navy, as an Engineman 2nd Class. He enlisted in the service in
1958 and was
honorably discharged in 1967. He was employed as a truck driver for Central
Trucking Co.,
Harrisburg, for over 22 years. He then was a truck driver for Cherry Hill
Hardwoods, Inc.,
Richfield RR1, for four years, until the time of his death. Mr. Spade was
a member of Stony
Run Mission Church, McAlisterville RR2, where he was a greeter and operated
the sound board
for the church choral group, The Joyful Sound. He was a member of Teamsters
Local 776,
Harrisburg, and Richfield Ambulance League. He was an avid golfer and hunter
and enjoyed
traveling and woodworking. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one
son, Matthew W.
Spade, at home; three brothers, Donald Spade and Dale Spade, both of Thompsontown,
and James
Spade of Richfield; eight, sisters, Sandra Neimond, Penny Sheaffer and
April Dock, all of
Richfield, Bonnie Fultz, Millerstown, Vicki Gray, Mifflintown, Debra Dressler,
McAlisterville, Lois Longer, Thompsontown, and Holly Strawser, Middleburg.
The funeral
service was conducted Friday from the George P. Garman Funeral Home, Mt.
Pleasant Mills, with
Rev. Truman A. Gaugler officiating. Interment was in the Evangelical Methodist
Cemetery,
Richfield RR1, where military honors were accorded by American Legion Post
No. 364,
Liverpool.

STONER, ROBERT E. ----- Dr. Robert E. Stoner, 70, of Lancaster, a retired
emergency room physician, died Wednesday,
February 12, 1997, at the Essa Flory Hospice Center after a two-year illness.
Stoner chaired
the emergency medicine department at Lancaster General Hospital from 1981
to 1987. Born in
Mifflintown, he was the son of the Elmer C. and Mary Swartz Stoner. He
and his wife, Jane
Swope Stoner, were married 42 years in August. Surviving, in addition to
his wife, are four
sons, Robert E. Jr. of Mount Airy, MD, Dr. Richard S. of Ocala, FL, John
S. of Lancaster and
Andrew R. of Dallas; and eight grandchildren. Stoner was a 1952 graduate
of Jefferson Medical
College, Philadelphia, a 1949 graduate of Gettysburg College and a 1944
graduate of Juniata
Joint High School. He was medical director for the Lancaster County Office
of Emergency
Management and medical adviser to the Lancaster County EMT Training Institute,
both since
July 1983. He was an associate of the American College of Emergency Physicians
and a member
of the American Medical Association, the Pennsylvania Medical Society and
the Lancaster City
and County Medical Society. He was a board member for Meals on Wheels,
a former board member
of the Lancaster County Chapter of the American Red Cross and a member
of the Red Cross
Disaster Committee since 1985. Stoner was named 1992 Physician of the Year
by the Lancaster
General Hospital Nurse Practice Council. He was the Juniata County coroner
from 1956 to 1960.
He served in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps during World War II. He was a
member of Messiah
Lutheran Church, Mifflintown. A memorial service was held at the Funeral
Home of Fred F.
Groff, Inc, Lancaster, Monday, with Chaplain Kenn Creitz and Rev. Keith
R. Bitner
officiating. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorial

She served in the United States Army from 1976 to 1980. She was employed
as a nurses' aid in
the Veterans Administration Hospital, Lebanon from 1980 to 1989 and at
Brethren Village,
Lititz from 1990 to 1995. She was an active member of the Worship Center,
Leola. The funeral
service was Monday, March 10 at Ronald C. Sheaffer Funeral Home, McAlisterville,
with Rev.
David D. Biser officiating. Interment followed in Richfield Union Cemetery.

assistant. She also had been employed by Beavertown Post Office, FMC, Lewistown
and
Pennsylvania Department of Revenue, Harrisburg. She and her husband owned
and operated
Village Pizza, McAlisterville. Services were held Saturday at Christ United
Church of Christ,
Beaver Springs, with Rev. David Meckley officiating. Interment was in Black
Oak Ridge
Cemetery, McClure RR2. The Beavertown Chapel of Aurand Funeral Homes, Beavertown,

ZENDT, W. ANDREW ------ W. Andrew Zendt, 87, of Mifflin, died at 3:25
a.m. Wednesday, December 25, 1996, at Locust
Grove Retirement Village, HC 67, Mifflin. Born October 18, 1909 in Walker
Township, Juniata
County, he was a son of the late Howard M. and Sylvia [Lauver] Zendt. His
wife, Ruth
[Bergstresser] Zendt, died August 10, 1994. Surviving are: brothers and
sister, John H.
Zendt, Mifflintown, Wilbur R. Zendt, Mifflintown RR2, Mrs. Minerva Z. Shearer,
Port Royal.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Carrie Z. Shelley, and two brothers,
Charles H. Zendt
and J. Lloyd Zendt. From 1932 to 1936, he was an elementary school teacher
in Walker
Township, Juniata County. From 1936 to 1993, he operated Zendt's Store,
Mifflin. He was a
1929 graduate of Mifflintown High School and attended Juniata College,
Huntingdon. He was a
member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Mifflintown, and Mifflintown Lions Club.
He was also a
former school director for Juniata County School District and was a former
board member of
Mifflin-Juniata United Way. Services were held Saturday at Rex Funeral
Home, Port Royal, with
Rev.Claude Baublitz officiating. Interment was in New Church Hill Cemetery,
Port Royal.

ZIMMERMAN, ETHEL M. --- Ethel M. Zimmerman, 87, of Brookline Manor Convalescent
Home, Mifflintown RR1, since 1985,
formerly of Linglestown, died at 4:22 a.m. Monday, January 20, 1997, at
Brookline Manor. She
was born July 25, 1909 in Harrisburg, Dauphin County, a daughter of the
late Tilden H. and
Anna Rebecca [Horning] Sheesley. She was preceded in death by her husband,
Oscar Edwin
Zimmerman, October 7, 1970. She is survived by one sister, Mary A. Miller,
Mifflintown RR1,
and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her only son, Ross
Edwin Zimmerman Jr.,
April 13, 1972. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Edna Jurich
and Sarah Wolfe,
and one brother, Cloyd Sheesley. She was a homemaker. memorial services
were held Thursday at
Brown Funeral Home, Mifflintown, with Rev. Louise Knotts officiating. Burial
will be in St.
Stephen's Lutheran Cemetery, Mifflintown RR1 Memorial contributions may

ZIMMERMAN, OSCAR EDWIN - HUSBAND OF ETHEL M. ZIMMERMAN (THE JUNIATA SENTINEL -- JANUARY 29, 1997)
ZIMMERMAN, ROBERT B. -- Robert B. Zimmerman, 88, of Brookline Manor
Convalescent Home, Mifflintown RR1, and formerly
of Mifflintown, died at 11:20 a.m. Friday, January 24, 1997 at the Manor.
He was born
February 28, 1908 in Fermanagh Township, Juniata County, a son of the late
Banks A. and
Katherine [Calhoun] Zimmerman. He was preceded in death by his wife, the
late Edna A.
[Alexander] Zimmerman, who died June 14, 1984. He is survived by one daughter,
Jean Z.
Farleman, Mexico, PA; two grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.
He was the last of his
immediate family, having been preceded in death by five brothers, Deverne
Zimmerman, Ira
Zimmerman, Samuel Zimmerman, Paul Zimmerman and Lester Zimmerman, and two
sisters, Mildred
Benner and Gladys Rickenbaugh. He was a graduate of Elizabethtown College
and attended
Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Mifflintown. He was a member of the
Juniata County
Retired Teachers Association and was a life member of Mifflintown Hose
Company No. 1. He
retired with 43 years of service as a teacher for the Juniata County School
District and
served as secretary for the Board of Supervisors of Fermanagh Township,
Juniata County, for
40 years. Funeral services were held Monday at Brown Funeral Home,
Mifflintown, with Rev.
Jonathan C. Terry III and Rev. Edwin Rohrbeck officiating. Burial was in
Union Memorial
Gardens, Mifflintown RR4.
